    If i understand correctly You are saying, use the avid codec in 720 edit and down convert at export. right?

    Any problem if i record at 30p?

    CS 6, My system specs are: sony vaio fx quad i7 1.83, 8gb ram, nvdia 1gb 425m,w7, hd screen,external esata for rendering too & external usb3 drove for video storage.
    Camera af100.
    Need to unlock card for mercury but dont know how.
    I would prefer not to edit avch

    Try avid studio now pinnacle studio 16 ultimatte or plus. it has what you are askimg for less than what you then 150.

    Avid studio now pinnacle studio ultimate has the magnetic timeline just like fcpx except that it can be turned off and has tracks besides this it has many similarities with fcpx. now owned by corel it is planned for furthrer development towards a more pro version.
    offerings include a trim tool like avids. At the moment very good for events,web,weddings… this app came out a couple of month before fcpx and its being developed by the liquid formerly fast/dps crew in germany

    Would you think it would be better to transcode? What codec do you recomend? Does prelude transcode?

    My main concern is shooting and editing with the avchd codec, not that its bad but I am afraid of getting bogged down in editing I have a good laptop but still the af100 codec is kind of heavy. Also shooting hand help makes me fear banding. I kind of think that the upgrade will take care of this..

    Would buying a recorder like the matrox or BM shuttle be a better route?
