Ummm… how do I email you directly? Can’t see an email address anywhere…

I thought that maybe if I started a new project in Vegas with only an empty event in it, then add the fx, it might work.
It didn’t…neither in v16 nor v15…

Just crashed Vegas again…and again…
So…I start an empty event on the Vegas timeline. I hit FX and choose Particle Illusion. I then Launch PI from the Video Event FX dialogue. I open my file in PI and the effect runs on the stage. I then cross back to Vegas and get the rotating arrow. As soon as I click in Vegas it greys out – not responding…etc… and so on…
Can’t get my effect rendered. I got another effect into Vegas and rendered. Why not this one?

Yes, I have all the emitter libraries…and have been through ‘explosions’ to see what’s there…boom 3 seems the best at this point, I’ll have another look.
Just crashed Vegas trying to bring my PI file into an empty event…

Thanks for your reply Allan.
I’ve been through all the parameters, changing them drastically one by one to see what affect they have. So far I can’t see anything that constrains the angle of emission. The parameter ‘Emission angle ‘ changes the direction of emissions but does not constrain them within a particular angle.
In terms of Boom 3, I also haven’t found a parameter which can lessen or intensify the flash at the start of the sequence. I don’t know where that hides.
I did discover in Boom 3, under the ‘boom-line’ parameters, a list of ‘debrie’ (thought it was spelt debris ☺ ) parameters and was able to tweak those.
What I am trying to achieve is the burst of a shell landing. I just about have what I want but have no idea how to reproduce it from scratch. I don’t remember how I got to the the basic form I have now. All I’ve been doing since getting 2019 is tweaking a previously saved file…I think probably made when trying out PI3 during a trial period.
I’ve taken to using PI as a stand alone…which unfortunately does not have render capability at the mo…but that way I don’t have the grief of Vegas crashing. I can locate the effect in Vegas with pan/crop once rendered to an empty event…
I have PI 12.0.4, which I take is the latest release.
I have sent log files to Joe Kozenko re Vegas crashing with PI…
Not sure if I’m necessarily the best for going on a beta program…
Thanks and all the best

The ‘spherize’ filter in Photoshop, if set to horizontal, can more or less achieve the effect I’m after for individual photos/frames. Can this be done in RED?
-
Jon…The smear filter potentially could do the sort of distortion I would like, only I want to distort way from a line…on both sides, as opposed to away from a point on one side. Any other suggestions?
-
Hmmm…I don’t know what I did but I have the effects working now…
-
Hmmm. I must be doing something (or many things wrong) as I can’t get any effect at all. I found the FEC smear and have played around with the parameters but nothing…and it doesn’t feature in the RED guide so I can’t get help there.
I’m playing around in the stand-alone version rather than in the Vegas plug in…

Thanks Jon.
I’m not quite sure what I want the finished thing to look like either, but yes both reality and perceived reality (actually reality verses philosophy) will be on at the same time, in words on either side of the head, perhaps with arrows pointing opposite directions…which move left and right as the head stretches left and right. The effect re the head I think I’m after is the head stretching horizontally – more so through the nose and less out at the ears – showing a clear distortion.
Yes, the head I think would want to have alpha around it so I can choose my background.
Where is the FEC Smear effect? I’m quite new to RED though have used a few things in it.
All the best
