Cool, I had a pvm 14m4u when these came out and I heard it was the new version of my old monitor. All this time I never realized the multi format aspect of it. Now I see what everyones been raving about all this time. I bought a bvm-d14h5u a year and a half ago for 4 times the price I could have had one of these for. Thanks for keeping your cool Walter, I know you’ve covered this before and I’ve always had tunnel vision not realizing it’s muli format-480; 720 + 1080.

With the 500 and 750 gb sata drives and the 4 bays in the new machines the issue of storage has made a significant turn and what was once an added cost for external storage is now part of the price we are paying for a new machine for most of us. The ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB graphics card has better performance for another $250.00 and more and more software takes advantage of the extra power. Bare Feats.

Me, I’m a bit of a minimalist and am making do with my dual 2ghz g5 with kona2. It’s my contribution to Kyoto. It’s often tempting to keep up with the latest gizmos but there is a cost on the enviroment to all this consumerism. Frieghter loads of hazardous old computer bits are being smuggled into 3rd world countries for disposal these days if you’ve seen any of these news documentaries. Guys like Walter here on this forum are quite justified in keeping abreast of cutting edge tech and I’m not trying to catagorize you or anyone but people like myself (one man band who wears many hats) can get by with the bare neccessities as we are often not on the same types of time pressures as the full time editors. I just wanted to shed some light on that issue and hope we all consider these things when purchasing things.

Scotty – you should slow down and proof read, your post has sooo many typos!
It also sounds like you have been doing quite a few of these which does tend to look more like piracy activities. I can see needing to do this on a rare occassion but if you had rights to the material you should also have access to the original masters before the encoding/authoring process.

Mpeg 2 is a lossey format so you lose something everytime you convert – reconvert.

It isn’t just size that matters eh, (believe me, I know) but from what I’ve been hearing about the BT-LH1700WP since it came out is how accurate it is and it was suitable for color grading. Panasonic claims “Faithful color reproduction – closely matches chromatic ranges of CRT monitors” Do you see a noteable difference between these two monitors color wise? (BT-LH1700WP or Sony PVM-14L5/1)

Thanks for pointing that out Walter and I’m glad you caught it, I don’t know why I thought it was built in, I’m confusing it with something else.

So by sending the pvm analog hd via component from your card you would get an sd image on the crt but the color is good enough for grading and the colors equate well – back into hd color space. Or am I missing something here, like the analog component inputs on the L5/1 are analog auto switching sd/hd as well? I’ve always considered this monitor to be sd unless you had the optional hd card. I’ve just tried to find this out but can’t find the info on line.

Other considerations for you joslyn20 are:
You would still benifit by the larger hd monitor for evaluating things like focus and depth of field of the hd video.
The BT-LH1700WP runs on 12 volts, has an anton bauer adapter available from panasonic and a viewing hood which would make it very usefull in the field when shooting with your HVX200.

Well Shane, I think I should have elaborated more on my suggestion. The overall issue being discussed was rendering. Given the situation, the graphics card seemed like the best place for MaximaDrive to shovel money for “increased throughput when rendering” thinking it would make motion more responsive and help keep your attention to tasks at hand. Any other rendering with DV that won’t take place in the background is best dealt with over lunch.
I just did a google search on “mac mini render farm” and a ton of stuff popped up. Might be worth looking into as these things are so small and powerfull. With export via compressor and all the up/down/format conversions we do it would be nice to have your own render farm and they wouldn’t take up a whole room either. It would be more like having a hobby farm as oppossed to having a real render farm.

I don’t own either monitor right now but thought I’d offer some food for thought.

Thanks to the bkm-143 hd-sdi card you can add hd to the pvm crt monitor for about $1500.00. The BT-LH1700WP has it all built in so they are in the same price bracket when equipped for hd. Tough choice…

The pvm is 4:3 – 16:9 switchable so with your HVX footage you will get a larger viewing area on the wide format BT-LH1700WP monitor. 16:9 on the pvm will give you a 11″ X 6″ picture to view (measuring the bezel of my bvmd-14h5u which should be about the same as the L5) I would think the BT-LH1700WP would have about a 15″ X 8.5″ actual picture which is a noticable difference in actual viewing area.

I’ve used a lot of 13-14″ monitors and really liked the 20″ ones but now I’m down to 14″ ones and with a 16:9 aspect ratio they seem like 8″ monitors to me and the 20″ seem like 14’s when you pop a wide screen bezel on them. For that reason a PVM-20L5/1 would be worth the extrea cost over the 14″

When you consider the actual area of the viewing surface 11″ X 6″ =66 square inches.
The The BT-LH1700WP at let’s say ……………………………..15″ X 8″ =120 square inches.
That’s almost double the actual size of the image you are looking at.

DV is a walk in the park for most modern computer systems. Spend your money on the fastest graphics card you can afford. That’s the most immediate bottleneck in the system. There are huge strides being made in graphics card technology these days for this reason.

That’s just it, Koreans pay through taxes so it isn’t that exspensive. It’s an essential service like road building, snow plowing and education. Right now a T1 line is $600.00 instalation and $300.00 per month last time I checked in my area but appearently in Korea they have 6 times that speed as thier normal service. If you had that bandwidth you wouldn’t pay for cable, you wouldn’t need it. You would save on your fedex bill too. e-Deliverables could all go over internet and much faster delivery times. I’m just saying we need to look at this, the rest of the world is 10 times slower and we will be 50 times slower in a year from now. Incidentally much of Europe and the UK (basically Pal Land) is about 25% faster than North America because of their bit structure as used on the internet. Our T1 is 1.544 mbps and theirs is 2.048 mbps and dsl is the same ratio.

Actually a lot of it has been upgraded to fibre optic from back in the 70’s. Sorry if my 1st post made it sound like it had to be replaced. My thinking was more like a small area like Korea could change their modeus oprerendi and say start broadcasting TV over the internet easily (if they are not already) compared to over here where there are presumably many more irons in the fire and more ducks to line up.

Yes, as Steve pointed out it’s North Korea that is Communist and like Cuba they are suffering from embargos and trade sanctions. China on the other hand is chugging right along with all the contracts the AT&T’s of world send them for the cut rate manufacturing that bolsters the shareholder dividends so well and we consumers hungrily buy up those goods on boxing day week! China has a trojan horse though. They aquired it when they regained control of Hong Kong in 2000. It’s the biggest badest capatilist based economy on the planet and it’s spreading!
