Hi yes it’s a bit annoying the way subclips work compared to avid so I don’t use them, just using markers instead, but I still prefer it’s multicam editing. The work around I did was to make the group, add the markers as you want them but don’t change the angle in the viewer until it’s been edited into your timeline. If you switch away in the viewer all those markers disappear. Infuriating.
I was only dealing with a close up and wide for an interview clip so this was fine as I could just cut the one angle in then go through the timeline and selected close up or wide as I wished. If you want to cut live with open gang on you can though as once the group has been edited into the timeline the viewer is displaying the instance of the group from the timeline and not the original master group so switching doesn’t seem to delete the markers. Also, weirdly, the markers stay on the timeline.
So to summarize, you can do it; make the group, add your markers, for safety duplicate the group, edit your group into the timeline as normal and switch angles from that instance of the group. Never switch angles in the viewer on the original group clip.
Hope that makes sense and works for you!

January 4, 2007 at 3:17 pm in reply to: 23.98 Multiclip editing

    Hi David,
Thanks for that, sorry it’s taken so long to reply but Christmas happened and then I was on another job so couldn’t test anything out until now.
I managed to set up a 23.98 DV capture setting which, hallelujah, worked just fine. The bit I was overlooking before was changing the input to 1080 23.98 and the compression output to DV 23.98. I’m getting a facility company to digitise the material for me and they have a Kona 2 which copes fine with this.
Once in DV on the Graids I can take it home and cut away as usual on my G5. If the media is spread over a couple of drives I have been able to run 9 angles at once but otherwise I just start with 4 and do passes with the other cameras.( If we have to run it on a laptop I wouldn’t expect to run all the cameras simultaneously so that’s fine.)
The only drawback with FCP compared to avid here is that you have to switch the selected cameras for each instance in the timeline which means going through each edit in open gang and changing the 4 cameras viewable in the the viewer. It’s a payoff I’m ok with as a swap for being able to multicam edit at DV quality instead of an avid ‘m’ resolution but it would be great if there was a way of changing them for ‘all selected instances in the timeline’. (Clients get a bit edgy when they say ‘can we just have a look at the wides’ and 10 minutes later they’re still watching you click away!)
I don’t know whether you do a lot of multiclip editing and this is something you know about or not? If not I’ll make another post for it and hope Apple pick up on it.

Thanks again for your reply and Happy New Year!

Thanks Mark, yes I am running 5.03 so I’m going to try and whittle down a copy of my project and see if that works.

Unfortunately I think the project size has reached it’s maximum already and it won’t allow me to copy songs into another project, my worry is that it’s not the project that’s too big but the song seqence itself because it’s referenced to multiclips. If this is the case then no matter what size the project, once you’ve got up to a certain number of cuts with multiclips you might never be able to copy the sequence. I’ll have to do some tests with a new project to find this out but it still leaves me with a problem on this one. My next plan is to try and copy the project and then delete some bins from the copy to make a smaller project, hopefully this will work! . . .

I am using a G-raid firewire 800 for the 9 main cameras and have had the remaining 18 cameras (they were set up on a timeslice rig) delivered on two 75 gb lacie firewire drives and one 300Gb firewire drive. I have transferred some of the timeslice material to my G-raid SATA drive but didn’t have room for all it to go over. I’ve finished another job now so will be able to clear it off and get it all off the standard firewire drives and onto the SATA. Could they be causing the problem?
