Thank you for the level of detail in your review of your experiences. Information from the front lines is of great help to cutters like me who are groping forward into unknown territory…figuratively and literally working in the dark!

Currently we are facing the challenge of working on a long form project with lots of source material-and learning the limitations of CS4. (our material is in the 2 Terabyte range and with only a third of the material in and a dozen or so sequence culls cut — we’re at 120Mb project size.) We’ve worked through countless issues to get here and we’re discovering as we go.

The 50mb project limit parameter that you’ve bumped into is important info… However, the solution of cutting a project into several projects is counter intuitive to way the way I prefer working.

In CS4, are people finding that a 50 Mb project size a working parameter that must be worked in to the protocol?

Does anyone have any experience working with lots of material for long form projects? Any suggestions on how to get at all your footage in one project?

Is there a solution -even another edit system if neccessary – that can enable me to work with all the footage in one project?

Thanks for your consideration of these questions.

    Respectfully,

    Hi,

We are trying to edit a long form documentary with a large data base of P2 clips (1.5Tb) and about 200Gb of HDV material.

The project size (120mb) appears to be the problem and has crippled functionality. (small projects work well.)

Is there any solution other then carving the project up into multiple smaller projects?

(Note that even CS3 hung/froze with large project size – appearing to run out of memory… so going back to CS3 won’t help – we upgraded to CS4 because we figured the additional RAM we could get to would resolve the issue.)

We love what Premiere Pro can do but we are frustrated with failings.

As far as solutions, your suggestions can include alternative software/systems that can edit a large project as outlined.

    Our set-up:

    HP xw8600
    x64 based pc
    Vista ser. pk. 1 -6001
    intel x5450 @ 3ghz 3000mhz
    4cores x 2
    Bios HP786f5vo1.31 10/15/2008
    sybios 2.5
    Ram 8Gb
    Nvidia GeForce 8000 GTS 512

At this point I will do nearly anything to get back to editing. Days click by, deadlines apporach and we’re re-booting.

    Thanks!
