I am having almost the exact same problem but I am using Sony Vegas. Trying to render video in Vista 64. The system starts out and eventually just freezes. I thought it was my vegas program just like you are thinking it is cs4. But I have found that while copying large files back and forth to hard drives I get the same issue. I think it may be a hard drive issue (set up, drivers, I don’t know). Have you found a solution yet? This is killing me.

I thought Vegas used the codecs installed on my computer as opposed to having its own codecs???
