  • Troubleshooting Premiere CS4 on Vista 64

A friend from a video group at MSFT pointed me to this forum. Lots of great information but no silver bullet.

I am running Vista 64 Ultimate on an Intel quad core chip on an MSI P7N motherboard, X1900 512 meg graphics card, 8 gigs of RAM, and booting off a new 1 gig Seagate hard drive.

After some initial hiccups I got Photoshop and Lightroom running perfectly (had to update the graphics driver).

Premiere CS4 will install and start, but always hangs. Sometimes it hangs when I am working within the program. It always hangs when I try to export a project. Media encoder starts up, cranks away for a minute or two, then freezes.

There are no error screens, it just hangs.

If I go into task manager and manually shut down all of the Premiere processes, then I can restart Premiere (then it freezes again). Otherwise it own’t start without a reboot.

I have done the following so far:
    1) Ran memtest against all RAM on the system (OK)
    2) Swapped out the graphics card for a different card (no change in behavior)
    3) Reinstalled CS4 (twice) (no change in behavior).

This is a fresh Vista 64 install with all updates installed.
I am running out of ideas.
I am reluctant to go back to Vista 32 or XP because Photoshop absolutely screams on this system.

Any thoughts on other troubleshooting steps, or tips for dentifying which componenet of Premiere is causing the problem?

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks, that is a helpful link.
    I’m still playing whack-a-mole.
It doesn’t help that when I disconnect from the Internet Premiere won’t run due to a “licensing error.”
I have gotten the system to run normally multiple times, but am then unable to get the same result through a boot cycle.
Taking a day off and then back to it.

First of all thanks for the troubleshooting link.
But quite frankly this is bull***t. Premiere cs4 is not a first run software and I am not a beta tester. I bought this software to edit video not spend all my time troubleshooting. I have spent countless hours, days actually, trying to get this software to do what it is advertised to do. I have removed and reinstalled premiere, reformatted and installed Vista and then CS4 and it still won’t work correctly. The only other software installed is Office 2003. Some of my issues are:

The monitor display freezes importing from my XH A1 if I stop and hit play again so I have to use the tiny LCD on the camera.

The only format I can export in is Windows Media. Anything else will start encoding and after between one and two minutes will hang, eventually premiere stops responding.

I save every time I make a change because it will probably crash.

If I undock a panel there are no drop zones to put it back. I have to reset the workspace to go back to normal. Worked fine in CS3.

BTW I am running 64 bit Vista Business, two 2.7 quad cores with 6 gigs of ram on an HP box that was, according to HP, designed for video editing. The box is a rocket ship.

Sorry for the rant, I don’t usually do this, but I am at wits end. I run a network with 800 PC’s, 16 servers, an over 40 switches and I have never experienced this kind of problem with any software. I have a project due for the school district I work at and will not be able to get it done.

Most threads end without resolution of the problem. Could someone respond and tell me how to get things working? I don’t even mind if you tell me I’m an idiot. That I could live with!

I am having almost the exact same problem but I am using Sony Vegas. Trying to render video in Vista 64. The system starts out and eventually just freezes. I thought it was my vegas program just like you are thinking it is cs4. But I have found that while copying large files back and forth to hard drives I get the same issue. I think it may be a hard drive issue (set up, drivers, I don’t know). Have you found a solution yet? This is killing me.

Have you tried running a disk check and defragmenting your disks?

Yes, in fact I have defrag running as a scheduled task every night. I did install Adobe’s latest patch and it seemed to help. I can now export to different formats. However the other issues remain. Especially when trying to import footage. If I pause or stop I have to close the import tool and re-open it to have it display on the monitor. I am actually getting use to just using the viewfinder in my camcorder instead of the monitor. I did try moving files around and had no issues. Exporting to quick time has problems with audio out of sink or no audio. I have seen posts about these issues and will have to read them now that the exporting is trying to work. Still very frustrated with Adobe about this. It seems that software developers are using the public for their testing. This is really frustrating when you have people counting on you to get something done. They don’t understand that some things are beyond your control, they think you are making excuses.

I understand how you feel, but I must point out that it is not the developers who make the decisions. I am a developer myself and managers have to pry software away from us with a crowbar. There are always things that need improving, but the software has to get out the door at some point. 😉

Are you sure you have the AME 4.0.2 update? I believe that fixed the QT export problems. If so, then export to a lossless format and use QT Pro to encode to QT format. Otherwise sit tight until NAB when the much anticipated 4.1 update is due.

    Cheers
    Eddie
