[Steve Connor] “Well if you put a long lens on an EX3 then you will be able to achieve that look without a Letus adapter that’s why I’m going to be buying one!”

    Hi Steve,

You can actually get really nice short DOF shots with the EX1 at the long end of the stock lens when close up and this will be enhanced for $1,000 with the Schneider 1.6X and hopefully later a 2X. But, as others have noted, this requires a very specific set of shot rquirements and is no sub for the adaptors. The beauty of the Letus type adaptors is reducing that set of requirements so as that very short DOF can be acheived in most situations. In my mind the coolest feature they allow is the use of Tilt / Shift lenses on a large (creatively imposed) “film size”.

These adaptors are still the key for those shots, the size of the gadget pretty well mandates tripod use (thus eliminating the benefit of the “semi shoulder” mount for that type of shooting), there is no image quality improvement. For that style of shooting I would think EX1, Letus, great monitor. Unless you need Genlock or Timecode you will add nothing that I can see by going EX3. Caveat: that really cool frame rate dial.

[Pat Ford] “Wish I had some idea how much the EX-1 would improve the footage for mere mortals. It obviously does wonders for guys like Phillip Bloom.”

    Hi Pat,

The footage out of the EX1 is crisp and beautiful. I agree that the pieces on Phil’s site are terrific. The narrow depth of field that makes them so special looking is largely a function of the Letus adaptor, though, not the EX (and of course Phil’s skill). I think it is probably important to consider that that look is not possible with an out of the box EX (1 or 3) alone.

    Pat,

I am very impressed with this update. It does away with clip browser, plays back beautifully in all formats and cuts archived files in half.

    Very, very good!

[Nigel Cooper] “Good point, you are not missing anything. You would be if the hard drive was 500GB, but sadly it is not. Come on Sony.”

…now a similarly sized device that would record 4:2:2 from HDSI…

[Mick Haensler] “Oh I’m sooooo glad I waited to buy more SxS cards. 60 gig direct connect hard drive for around a grand, happy birthday to me!!! The forums are all a twitter.”

I am missing the benefit as opposed to 2 32 Gig Cards. Aside from price, sticking with SXS seems so much cleaner. What am I missing?

    Hi Chris,

It is probably not a good idea to think of one Gamma setting as being better than another. I use Cine 1 almost exclusively, but that is due to the fact that I am only shooting variable, wide dynamic range scenes and am always struggling not to (critically) blow highlights or darks. Cine 1 is the most “compressed” curve, and will help in this situation. Note: Cine 2 compesses even futher than Cine 1, but hard limits highlights, so many avoid it for general use. Cine 3 and 4 compress the highlights less, so you may opt for one of those if situations allow (flatter light, lower contrast scenes). There are also (more subtle) differences in how far the darks are pushed in each curve by default.

    Hi Bill,

I am unsure if you wrote this about me, but as it was in direct response to my post, it might have read read as though you had.

Please visit the thread here where this conversation began

    https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/142/857733

where I was clear to state, “I have also been using those color settings (credit due to Bill Ravens).”

As far as my additions here in terms of curve adjustments, those are my own findings and it would not seem that any foot note is due.

I am certainly not looking to represent anyone elses ideas as my own. 🙂

    Hi Kevin,

I am using -4 for Black.

I have been looking at the curves quite a bit by viewing the SAW gradient in the maintainance menu, and loooking at the live curves through SDI. This showed that regardless of Gamma setting, Black defaults to +4 IRE (although the PP Black setting reads 0). Adjusting down to -4 pulls Black to the floor.

Not sure if it is OK to post outbound links here, but I am unsure how else to post photos here.

These were done to show some other PP settings, but each shows the Cine1 curve at -4 as well:

Here are a few more examples of some curve adjustments.

The first two are related to the Gamma setting:

The second two show the max adjustments of the Black Gamma setting:

Hope these are useful for visualization of these settings.
