In addition to what I wrote on your other post, note that black at -12 is 8 under the floor. If there are near blacks or blacks in your scene, it is likely that you will block them up with this setting.

I’ve had some concerns about this low black setting as well.
For average/balanced lighting conditions, what are you using for your black setting?

Hi Kevin,

I am using -4 for Black.

I have been looking at the curves quite a bit by viewing the SAW gradient in the maintainance menu, and loooking at the live curves through SDI. This showed that regardless of Gamma setting, Black defaults to +4 IRE (although the PP Black setting reads 0). Adjusting down to -4 pulls Black to the floor.

These were done to show some other PP settings, but each shows the Cine1 curve at -4 as well:

I love the way people “take” others’ work without reference. The original work for this matrix was done in my own lab, according to the procedure popularized by Paulo Ciccone for the JVC HD110. Indeed, the black settings are for VERY carefully controlled lighting situations. For everyday use, a black setting of -4 will yield more headroom, less crushed blacks. My negative experience from sharing my work will, most assuredly, make me think twice before I post info like this again.

Philip Bloom was mature enough to credit me for this matrix in his post. I expect others’, less mature, to do the same.

where I was clear to state, “I have also been using those color settings (credit due to Bill Ravens).”

As far as my additions here in terms of curve adjustments, those are my own findings and it would not seem that any foot note is due.

I am certainly not looking to represent anyone elses ideas as my own. 🙂
