I would have to say you have a bit of a hardware issue, and not the AJA hardware. I would recommend going back to the builder/integrater/installer to see if they can narrow it down as it could be everything from components in the system to missing files in the OS or application install. The gap is just to wide to narrow down via a forum. We pointed out all the obvious ones in regards to the AJA hardware.
In my experience (and it isn’t with a Mac, sorry) I have never seen a crashing issue in regards to the AJA hardware. It usually acts other ways to show a problem but doesn’t crash. The crashing usually comes from a conflict on the system, missing information or just faulty hardware.
Even a reference issue shouldn’t cause a crash, it should just result in problems capturing, laying off or picture quality.

Ah, confirmation correct.
Taking the clutter out of the mix certainly helps. Not sure if you can really do that on other OS platforms 🙂

We are using the OEM version but our driver also supports both the Kona and the Xena (it’s all the same to us). In fact we used Kona 2s many years ago because there was nothing else and still have a few customers running on it today using the same driver that we have for the 3s. File system plays a large role and we are on a Linux solution, running a vanilla kernel. Helps to have OS and file system pros on the team……
Also keep in mind that we have been doing this for about 8 years so lots of years of experience under our belt of putting out a solid all in one solution together 🙂

Happy to hear someone really understood the rambling.
Archaic is not a bad thing, especially if you can’t get a real answer as to how the many applications out there are handling this type of stuff and if they are doing it correctly. Makes you realize shortcuts are not always a good thing.

Isn’t it funny that the products using DVI never divulged this. I am still amazed at who I run into that still thinks DVI does 10bit. argh….

We take great pride in Rave and the goal has always been to do a product that moves bit for bit and be as open as we can about it. Because of this we are forced to understand every aspect of every component and how it is effecting them. It helps to be surrounded by people who demand the same. AJA has always been one of those companies that understands this importance.
When it comes to your bits don’t be suckered in by marketing, dig and get the real truth.

Forgot to add that this is for HDMI 1.3 (2006), sorry anything older doesn’t apply.
Also, it support 12 and 16bit 🙂

Yes the HDMI spec does support 10bit.
Better yet, just go with the SDI to HDMI $400 AJA converter to add to a solution you already own. It would be cool if AJA added this into their Kbox, I would happily pay the extra $. This way one solution gives you assured pass thru, bit for bit for both methods of delivery. I think the Dreamcolor will be a popular monitor and no doubt that many others will go this path also. HDMI makes sense to the monitor (don’t expect all the other high-end gear to change) which is why the Kbox solution would be very good all the way around. For portable on-set jobs, less is more. The less hardware and connections to add in the mix the better 🙂
