Have to agree with Tim here. If your not a pro at the hardware and OS side then you best stick to the recommended specs 🙂
I haven’t been able to dig enough into this Mobo yet to be a naysayer….
Not that AJA won’t help but if everyone were to go off in this direction, things could get ugly. High-end video is very demanding and it is usually better to stick with the specifications that vendors lay out there (or at least really close), if you want good support. Otherwise they are shooting in the dark along with you in solving any issues. If you think vendors will build up every combination of gear out there to solve your problem, your crazy.
Some things you just can’t cheap out with and motherboards are a prime example 🙂

Nice little Gem there, will have to get a sample and see how it holds up running Rave.
In addition to this I also purchased a Quadro FX 570 graphics card as the Xena LHe simply won’t like a consumer Geforce card.
This comments strikes me odd. We use the AJA products, both the OEM versions and the Xena/Konas and so far we have had no issues running with GeForce cards. In fact our new 3d Live product runs with a GeForce 295 perfectly, while we are running lower version in Rave for the GUI. Wonder what the difference is?
The only pitfall with this board is that it is only a single CPU, but certainly doable for some applications that are not CPU intensive 🙂

FYI: We can do independent streams into a single AJA card 🙂
We have an upcoming demo in Burbank that shows this being done in another product we are offering.
Also, a couple years back we used our DiceHD product (which is a keyer, character generator) and did video switching amoung other things. Is that ready for prime-time software release, no. It was a special gig for Comcast at CES. All our current customers are using this for watermarking. But, this unit uses up to 6 AJA boards, so technically we could make it do 12 channels for a switcher. In our spare time……

Hope all is well. Off topic here: Have an exciting demo in LA in Feb if your around. 3D into a stereo Rave, out to our new product (3d Live) which is a mix down of the 2 SDI streams for 3D viewing in real-time on a consumer DLP. Also, the uncompressed DPX frames will be converted to proxies (on the Rave), pushed out to a server for streaming dailies. In addition we will be giving a peek at the new RaveDi, which does scaling and 3D LUTS.

It does on the Kona also Ramona, expect when the user is setup the system to ignore the important part of the signal.
I guess I missed making the point. We do this regardless if the TC is coming from RP188 or not. This is not done thru the function of just the I/O board but the application itself and other components we use in Rave. Within Rave we support all timecode sources and even a few tricks in the event there is none.
Most of the cases user error is to blame, but not always.

Thought I would throw this out there….
This type of capture (assemble) is done on the Rave and works exactly as you state you need. If your original tape TC jumps from hour 1 to hour 3, we assemble the record the same way(yes, so we can automagically pull the clips apart if needed). Actually we can support this two ways. The method I just stated and one where continuous TC to the tape but the embedded TC stays as the original.
It’s all about the coding 🙂

The only option for 2K (2048×1556) playback at 29.976 is to do a real-time 2048×1556 to 2048×1080 crop (where you can apply a window, that can move). This will allow you to play out at any of these frame rates.

2048X1080p 60I can not speak if FCP can do this but it is something we do on Rave regularly.
FYI-we do have a new tool arriving 2009 that allows a real time scale that will allow you to scale the 2048×1556(any raster for that matter) down to a video resolution to play at any video rate. Quality and real-time are the two factors that go into our tool design because of who is using the Rave systems.

Jumping in late here.
What your trying to do is all doable via a smart application. We(Rave) can handle 2:3 removal on the fly but this is done thru the software and not the AJA hardware as there is no assurance that the A frame is where the 2:3 will start, therefore the software needs to be flexible enough to be changed.
We do have a new product emerging that takes care of the type of situations you bring up rather nicely AND it ties to the AJA hardware so it appears to happen all in real-time. Watch for details after the first of the year.

I am not a FCP or ProRes user but this may be worth a shot AND I would most certainly call AJA for help.
If there is an issue with the firmware on the AJA board it will display a green flashing like you describe. I can not say with certainty that this is the case but it may be worth checking it out. If that AJA board sat on a vendors shelf it may be running a version of firmware that is outdated.

Consequently it’s not possible to drop an individual shot in. You have to drop in the entire sequence from black to black.
Although the AJA board is a frame delayed for conversion we have made inserts entirely possible for a single frame within Rave (having to lay off the entire sequence is crazy). It boils down to much more than just the I/O device but that of good coding for all other aspects. It is about bringing the entire solution into unison 🙂
If you have a clear understanding of each components requirements it usually can be worked around. Just thought I would throw that out there.
