thanks, you are right! I found the frame size setting in Compressor’s inspector window as you said and was able to change it to the project’s frame size in the transcode. However, my clip went from being only 26 MB all the way up to 4gigs! Unfortunately my SSD is at 90% capacity right now. If i don’t increase the frame size in Compressor, then i can keep using the smaller file but i’ll have to render it everytime which is a pain. I tried using unlimited RT but i keep getting the dropped frames box so looks like my computer can’t handle the unlimited RT.

Increasing the frame size doesn’t improve the picture one but only adds to file size and allows me to use the clip in the project without rendering. Yes it’s a tough trade off, perhaps i’m better off keeping the clips’ native frame size and just rendering everytime? You know of any other work around?

Now as far as the frame rate, if u think mixing 23.976 and 23.98 is ok because they are essentially the same frame rate, then what do you think about mixing 24 and 23.98? isn’t 24 just 23.98 rounded up?

So then it’s ok for 23.976 and 23.98 clips to be used interchangeably and mixed together on the same timeline? I thought 24 fps was pretty much the same as 23.98 but i know people on this forum have said that mixing 24 and 23.98 could cause problems! so you can see why i’m confused here.

I have a knack for spending 50+ hours on an edit only to find that i have to rebuild it all from scratch because of some little mismatch or other.

On that note, for the transcoding that i am doing on Compressor, SHOULD I USE 23.976 or 23.98?

i have ALOT of additional footage and it is not great quality and i didn’t want to waste a lot of hard disk space creating an apple prores version. But if there’s no other way around that, then of course i will do it. I thought perhaps at least 1 of these 3 formats would work in fcp7: mov, avi, or mp4
and of course my main footage is of high quality canon 5d and of course that i converted to apple prores

Roger, i used mediainfo and it says my DVD video is 720×480, 29.97, mpeg NTSC, text: RLE…..just like BARTA and SHANE also had said.

On the DVD the video is squashed horizontally, so when I import it into MPEG streamclip i am going to convert it to 16:9 anamorphic since that is what the original video was in before it went to DVD. Also, I believe the original framrate may have been 24 before it went to DVD. So perhaps i should convert to 24? However, i am not totally sure if it really was 24fps so perhaps i should just leave it at 29.97fps.

Also, what should i export this as on mpeg streamclip for it to be compatible with FCP7? I will be editing this video on FCP7. Should i transcode to Quicktime? or to DV? or to apple prores? should field dominance be upper or lower? should i select “deinterlace video”? (I did notice that the horizonal interlace lines were visible somewhat when there’s a lot of motion on the screen).

Dave, the frame RATE is totally fine, most of the footage is 29.97 so i am converting everything to conform to that frame rate. No problems there.
The problem is with the frame SIZE of the new footage I have which is in 640×480. (Remember, most of my other footage is from an iphone4 at 1280×720 so this new footage needs to conform to that frame rate). I don’t mind if the new video footage gets stretched. However, I don’t know how to convert the frame size from 640×480 to 1280×720. If i don’t convert it, then I will have to render it every time and that is too much of a pain. So I want to convert it. However, when I transcode to prores422 LT there is nowhere in the edit box where i can see that i am able to change the frame size. Everything else can be converted but for some reason i can’t find out what to select in Compressor to change the fame size. Please let me know thanks.

I don’t know what to do now. This music video is pretty amazing, catchy and very unique. I think it can win awards for sure. However, the quality is compromised now, and that’s not going to cut it. It’s unfortunate, considering there were no compromises in the filming of it, the quality started out top notch, but somewhere down the line with all the conversions and transcoding that had to take place thanks to systems never being compatible, now the video quality has deteriorated. I’m not sure how to fix this.

My mistake started 8 years ago when i exported the first cut of the video, I used Sorenson Video 3 Decompressor thinking decompressor meant it was uncompressed. So from that point, i’d been working on a poor quality source…i should have never used Sorenson for a music video going to broadcast.

Yes, the black letterbox bars on all 4 sides are visible in the FCP project as well. I know for a fact that the original footage was in anamorphic 16:9 DV, highest quality HD i believe. But from that original footage, i have a Sorenson Video 3 Decompressor export and that’s all I have to work with. But this file is only 660MB for a clip that’s just over 6 minutes long! That tells me it’s quite a bit compressed. That’s my first problem.
The sequence settings of my project are 3:2 (720×480), which matches the source clip I have…..so possibly the problem is with the source clip istelf when I exported it with Sorenson codec from the FCP project about 8 years ago. I don’t have the very original footage anymore. When I transcoded this clip couple weeks back, I used the default NTSC DV setting in Compressor.
Should i try a different transcoding codec/setting in compressor and re-transcode the Sorenson source clip i have? It’s only one 6 minute clip so easy to re-transcode and then reconnect media in FCP. However, i finished the edit. On the timeline i took this one 6 minute clip and chopped it up quite a bit, slowed down parts and sped up other parts, quite detailed chiseled timing work so that it would sync to the soundtrack (music video). So i’m not sure how well reconnecting the media will work. but i won’t be able to recreate this edit from scratch.
