i’ve already cut half the video without first converting. At this point perhaps i can finish editing it first. And then afterwards i can batch convert the h.264 files into apple prores on mpeg streamclip and then after that reconnect all my clips on the timeline to their respective prores clips.
As long as i keep the exact same file names it should be easy to reconnect. This sounds like it should be entirely possible to do. However, in practice maybe it isn’t. I find FCP is not very good at reconnecting clips, i always have to reconnect them individually and that is very time consuming. Please let me know what you think about this approach, which is to finish the edit with the current settings and then reconnecting to the prores clips afterwards.

ok so how should i capture my footage into FCP in the first place so that if my drive crashes and i need to recapture it will all sync up? Let’s see, how can I do this correctly, i goto file -> capture, right? is that automatically a batch capture? i’m confused about the steps i need to take.

i installed MPEG Streamclip and read the instructions, but i just can’t figure it out. I inserted the DVD and dragged the DVD icon over the MPEG Streamclip screen. It seems to capture about 4 seconds of complete silence and no picture at all. Or maybe it didn’t do anything. I don’t understand how this works. The instructions don’t explain much. How do i capture the DVD and then convert it into a QT file with this preogram??

thanks, is MPEG Streamclip the best program for converting the DVD movie so that there is no degradation in quality? OK, naturally the video was already compressed when it was encoded into a DVD, but i don’t want it recompressed or affected when i encode it back to a QT file. Let me know!

I want to know how to copy a clip FROM ONE SEQUENCE TO A DIFFERENT SEQUENCE. WHen i copy a clip, i am able to paste it wherever i want within the same sequence with no problem, however it won’t paste when i open a different sequence. Another option is I could just matchframe it and then reset the in and out points in the source monitor, then open the new sequnce and drop it in there, but that is time consuming.

Also, is it possible to take a marked clip in the sequnce and matchframe the full marked clip in the source monitor, so that rather than just getting an in point i can get both the in and out points in the source monitor? I only know how to matchframe one frame, but i would like to hit matchframe and get both the in and out points from the sequence clip on the source clip as well.

i’m using a PowerBook G4, 1.67 ghz, (no intel).
i first tried installing Avid (no Mojo) last week with the dongle in the USB port when i was on OX 10.3.9 and it said error installing. So I called Avid (it was during the week so i was able to talk to them), and she said the problem was i needed to upgrade to OSX Tiger. So I went ahead and purchased/upgraded to Tiger and re-installed Avid. Maybe i should have checked to see if the Avid (though not working) was already installed and to de-install first. But i didn’t. (although i doubt that’s the problem). And now it says:

yeah but i don’t ever plan to edit for a profession. i’m a performance artist and i’m making videos to accompany my live shows and making music videos for my music

i tried exporting quicktime files (not QT ref files), but the sound somehow doesn’t get included. I don’t know why. I select audio in the options menu for export to be included and yet there’s no audio in the exported QT file. Any thoughts?
Right now the best solution for me seems to be to buy Avid. i can get it for under $300 with a student discount. I just didn’t see the point in owning Avid when I already have FCP and I’m perfectly comfortable editing in FCP, i really don’t care to have to learn another program.
To recapture everythying on FCP would be way more expensive. The source tapes are DVC-pro50 so i would have to hire a dvc pro 50 deck. Given that as the other option, I prefer to just buy Avid.

yeah i was just hoping there was a way to do it without having to buy more software that costs $500.
too bad they make these things so incompatible and difficult.
