    Hi Mark,

Raid 3 is an old system. With 6 HD’s I would recommend Raid5, if you want more protection Raid 6, but Raid 5 gives you enough redundance with just 6 drives in one array. I believe you use good reliable enterprise drives, all the same size and brand.

    cheers

    Hi Neil,

I really don’t know. But you shouldn’t have problems with your visa card. London is full of professional suppliers. Caldigit UK, CCK Media, Quadrant Solutions, rentaraid, altered images, Protape LTD, Planet PC. One of these should fit your needs.

    Cheers

July 4, 2013 at 6:26 pm in reply to: Is it possible to back up one RAID with another?

I think, if you can afford it, it’s the best back up – two seperate Raids with the same capacity both running on redundant raid levels.

    cheers

July 4, 2013 at 6:24 pm in reply to: Cost per GB for large data

A Net store 16 bay array with Thundeboldt connection would be my choice.
Raid5 is suitable for 8 bay raids, With 16 bay I would choose Raid6.
I think thunderboldt is the connection of the future.

    It’s all nice tries,

in the end it is just a nice idea to get shared storage to no budget conditions.
It belongs to the myth of fairy tails, grandma told us before we got to bed.
End of line: Either you spend some bucks for shared storage, if not there is no shared storage.

    cheers

David has got the best solution,
otherwise you need at least a mac mini server, san network, a SAS Raid (minimum) plus FC/SAS to thunderbolt connection with each Mac book attached to your data storage server.
I would do it this way:
One Raid5 main storage for your footage. Second (mirror) storage on another Raid5 device.
Editing people grab the footage from this desktop device (each of them).

    No matter what it costs,
you have to replace the eco drives!
The whole array will fail in the near future.

    Hi Paul,

thanks for the input. At the moment we run AVID on a 8core mac with Aja Kona LHi. It works well. Fot the future we consider a PC based solution.

    cheers
