November 6, 2016 at 12:11 pm in reply to: Needed: Thunderbolt 3 RAID Set-Up Recommendations

    Hi Ray,

first of all: Can your computer handle Thunderbolt 3?
    Now to your questions:
1: Yes, you can go with raid level6, which gives you more redundancy.
2: Yes it does, but keep in mind, that theoretical speed outputs, are not the outputs you get in reality.
3: One fast working raid – use your raids you already have for back-up (esata/Usb3 is fast enough for back-up)
4: see answer 3. We do one back-up on a esata raid5 plus one back-up on HDs. The Hds are stored in a different place.

By the way, none of your camera equipment meets a professional 4K standard. The new Canon 5D and the Panasonic AG-DVX200, or the Sony PXW-FS7 are prize sensitive professional solutions,

    cheers

    Hi Tom,

The LaCie you talk about has either raid0 or raid1 level. It has 2 HD’s. With Raid0 you have a maximum of speed, but no redundancy. In case one of the drives fail, your data is gone – forever, no recovery. In case of raid 1 you loose half of the space and a lot of speed, but you have redundancy.
Generally for us a raid with no redundancy is no option. A Raid with raid level 1 is too slow.
I can’t recommend this raid. You should go for a raid with level 5 or 6, which means redundancy in combination with speed. For example LaCie 5big.

    cheers

October 28, 2016 at 9:34 am in reply to: Pegasus R6 problems with El Capitan

    Hi Steve,

adobe 5.5 and ElCaptain does not work properly for everyone. Adobe wants you to join the cloud for extra bucks. They finished support for Box sets. The question is: Why did you switch to El Captain? Any benefits ? We still run Mountain Lion,
    it works great,

    Cheers

    Hi Steve,

Deinstall the pegasus software. Shut the computer down, unplug your Pegasus, then update your OS. Reinstall the newest version of the pegasus software. Sut down the computer. Plug the pegasus in, start the computer and try again,

    cheers

October 7, 2016 at 10:44 am in reply to: SSD RAID recommendations

    Hi folks,

you can put ssds in a raid. Does it make sense? First of all a raid with normal HDDs is fast. It’s fast enough to meet our specs. When you have the Atto 84en pcix card you can go with 1600 MB/s data speed.
The SSD option is not safer but terribly expensive. A 24bay raid with SSDs – no option.
You reach anyway the max. speed of thunderbolt connections or a pcix card together with a x16 slot.
My recommondation: The atto card in combination with a 8-24 bay Raid system Raid6 level an 4x8gb/s FC or thunderbolt connection. All with solid HDD’s.

    cheers

September 26, 2016 at 12:00 pm in reply to: Promise Pegasus Maintenance Routines?

    Hi Sashi,

media patrol is an automatic routine check with your raid system.
You can switch it on or off.
We don’t run it at all. We didn’t have serious problems for years – just
a bad drive here and there. The rebuilt was never a problem. All of our raids
are on raid level 6 plus spare. After 5 years or 50.000 working hours,
we swap the complete drives for new ones and use the old drives as
    back-up safety.

    cheers

September 15, 2016 at 3:36 pm in reply to: Integrating DAS and NAS RAIDs

    Hi Randall,

Small tree is one of the best, they can offer you a really professional set up.
We use Sonnet, Axus and Promise raids.
The connection is over FC with PCIx Cards, FC switch and Software.
Al Raids are 16 or 24 bay Raids.
The Computers have Atto cards (FN64) built in. Back-up is over esata on 4-bay Raids plus normal HDs.

    cheers

September 15, 2016 at 10:56 am in reply to: Integrating DAS and NAS RAIDs

    Hi Randall,

I think you’ve never had a data loss, because for us professionals redundancy with huge amount of data comes first.
Speed comes second, mainly because most of us have data speeds above 1000 MB/s.
The best solutions are via 4x8Gb/s FC or thunderbolt, mainly with 16 or 24 bay Raid5/6.
For a decent workflow in 4K including compositing effects you need more than 700 MB/s speed.
Even for a one man show you should consider a solution like this. The longer you work and getting more and more data to provide for your customers the more you appreciate a solution like this.
Just redundancy for your backup you can use a 4bay Raid5 with esata.

    Cheers

    Hi,

if you seek for professional advice, nobody in this forum will suggest a Drobo box.
I’ve never regretted the most expensive solutions, the cheap solutions have always been the most expensive ones,
