What a timely article. I just purchased a new Dual Opteron dual core system with 4 gig for ram and had been wondering why it was showing only 3 gig in the system properties. Now I know. I had noticed, in the BIOS, during start-up that it lists 4 gig of ram, but right below that it says something about 1 gig or ram. That must be the 1 gig I’m losing to the Black Hole you mentioned. Thanks again for a great article.

I will quit that iTunes process. I did have Norton but deleted the whole entire thing-everything- but it didn’t help. They only thing I can think of that has changed from when caputer used to work is that I’m now using XP Pro with SP2 whereas before I was using XP Home with SP2. I’m going to try to reinstall PrPro again onto my 2nd internal drive. That’s how I used to have it.

I figured out what was happening, why I couldn’t see the pan/balance 5.1 trays in the Audio Mixer. When I created the 5.1 settings I chose 1 stereo track instead of two. I set it to two and the trays are visible once again. Ah, victory, your taste is dewy sweet.

Serge,
You are awesome, man. Thanks so much. I love shortcuts like that. Do you have any other gems like that for AE? I know most of the Comp and Timeline keyboard shortcuts, but perhaps you have a few more like that Alt+W+W you just showed me. I can’t emphasis how helpful a simple little shortcut like that is going to be for me. I have dual monitors and have that workspace set up just the way I like it for my projects and its a bother to have to stop what I am doing, go up the the menu, and reselect my workspace when my palette’s get moved around. Thanks again.

Well, I’m sure I look a bit silly answering my own questions, but… I just realized that a 5.1 project in Premiere is looking for mono audio clips and I was trying to drop stereo clips into the timeline. I quick trip to Audition to convert them to mono cured that problem.

Timothy,
One more thing. I just created a new 5.1 based Premiere project and when I try to drag and drop one of my MP3 based sound effects into track 1 it wants to force it into a new track. Any ideas? It doesn’t do this in a non-5.1 project. Thanks again.

Timothy, you are awesome man. I swear I read the manual three times on that issue but never remembered reading that I had to actually drag them around. In order to get the channels to play where I have the pucks placed in the Audio Mixer, I had to map those 5.1 icons in the Prefs…Audio Hardware to some odd positions, but it works. For example, I have nothing mapped to channel 4, but in the Audio Mixer my puck is in the rear right and it plays as it should now. Here are two picks of the Audio Hardware settings I had to choose as well as the puck positions in the Audio Mixer. Do you see any problems? It looks goofy, but it all plays back as it should now.

Timothy said: “Have you matched the channels to the appropriate speakers in Premiere Pro’s Audio Hardware prefs?”
How do I do that?

Thanks guys. I think I will just go with Audition’s defaults and let Premiere Pro conform it. Happy editing.
