THANK YOU THANK YOU BILL! I cant believe I forgot about that little box! Thats what saved me! I’m still curious about Tom’s auto scale option in the user preferences though…

well they both have to be on the same dvd. They are different sequences though. We edited using our XDCAM EX at 23.98 on the majority of our sequences but our client wanted some things changed so they just went and recorded a few things in mini DV and mailed them to us, as well as another interview that we had to edit. So, a few of our 23.98 sequences have 29.97 clips thrown in. I’m pretty dumb with all this frame rate stuff…. any ideas?

Sorry to interject… I just have a quick question… I’m authoring a dvd w/ mixed media that has to be out by tomorrow. 23.98 HD and 29.97 SD material. Both edited in FCP 6. From reading around the web, it seems like the best thing to do would be to send it all out on a 23.98 timeline… here is my question, can we export our 29.97 sequences as they are and then bring them back into FCP and just drop them straight into our 23.98 timeline? Or do I have to do some conversion of some sort? CONFUSED!
    What do you think Jermey?

    THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!

    Don,
I’m wondering what helps eliminate this problem? I shot an interview in a construction site and all they had were florescent lights. My shutter is set to 180 degrees and I was shooting 1080 24p so it would put my shutter at 1/48th right? I only can notice the black bars when fast forwarding through the footage. Would it be better to turn the shutter off? Set it slower? I am still pretty up in the air when it comes to shutter settings. I’ve been told so many different things by so many different people.

    thanks

I think Andy and I are on the same wave length now.

Andy, I AGREE 100% with the playhead synch mode set to open!! This makes so much more sense to me!! Infact, after really learning about that a few weeks ago, thats how I usually edit and that was my glorious fix for the double click of doom… HOWEVER, it really bothers me that it will not stay on open playhead synch. For some reason it goes back to a “closed” playhead synch (i guess its closed since its not open haha), and so I have to retoggle it to be on open again. What I do now is I have changed my keyboard layout to make playhead synch open a simple quick toggle, as well as the return key I changed to “x” on my keyboard so I can have my right hand on the mouse and my left on the keyboard at all times. Do you know of any way to fix the playhead synch to stay “open” at all times????
Thanks to everyone for the replies and the tips as this has become quite the learning thread for me!

I wish media was to the point where you guys could just read my mind instead hahah…. I’ll leave that up to mr. jobs…..

Walter, by the single click option, I will explain using an example-
Lets say I am in the time line, and I would like to change the scale size of a particular clip. Double click the clip and it opens in the viewer, or single click and hit return. It makes so much more sense to me to click once and there it is in the viewer. Sometimes I will be editing key frames, and for some reason my playhead goes one step too far or my double click wasn’t good enough and suddenly i have made the changes to a completely different clip. I guess it just makes more sense to me… and I have been known to have a goofy thought process 🙂
As far as the Rate Stretch tool is concerned, I couldn’t agree with you more!!! I have always wondered why the speed setting effect the entire time line!!
I think maybe I was still unclear about the search option I am wanting in FCP. I have added a screenshot of After Effects to illustrate my point.
I like how it automatically eliminates everything irrelevant without me having to even complete my typing. Haha its like it finishes your typing for you hahaha

And for the still clips, color solids, slugs etc…. It just makes more sense to me to be able to grab the tail and drag it as long as you want than to add another step into the process which takes 5 more seconds.

Copy and paste- yea option click does help the cause, but seems easier to just right click right where you want to paste, on the track you want to paste and then paste it!

You make good points on most everything else!

hope that all makes sense…. Thank you so much for your reply though!!! You are a huge help for all FCP users here! Thank you!

Thank you for the posts! They have been some help so far.

Lars I really appreciate you going through each of my 10 deadly questions 🙂 I wasn’t expecting that at all so I really really am thankful for that! To clarify a few of my points:

I agree, this would be a nice feature. FCP does allow you to freely mix different frame sizes and rates on the timeline; the autoscaling-to-fit-frame-size is a switchable user option. One area where this feature might be handy would be in correcting pixel aspect ratio. Otherwise I wonder how useful it actually is. Could you elaborate on how you envision using it?

I recently was sent some PAL footage of a snowboarding tournament in New Zealand, and I need three quick clips of that footage. I dont need audio or anything else. Just the video. In premiere I am able to right click and select interpret footage and change my frame size and rate instantly. I can’t figure out an easy way to do this in FCP. I have had it a few times when pixel aspect ratios that are sent to me are screwy…..

10)Scroll Position- Lame how in FCP you have to type in your positioning in the motion effects tab. Seems like there should be arrow/scroll options…Like After Effects”

I don’t understand your issue here. Could you elaborate?
I have been working with hundreds of photos in my current project, and I like how in After Effects you can use the scroll on your mouse to move your center of your clip. In FCP it is either drag in the canvas or type in the exact amount. I would like to be able to slowly nudge it to where it needs to be… Maybe i’m too particular on this option hahah who knows.

As to your other responses, I can see your point of view as well 🙂 the Apple+F key is nice but I like how in After Effects, it automatically filters out everything else you aren’t searching for and leaves you with only related options all while still in the browser/effects panel. FCP isn’t quite as convenient i think. (Heaven forbid if I have to press a search button before getting me result haha)

Maybe you could help me with another one of my problems???
How come, when I’m looking for a font, there is not preview or anything similar?? I have to open up my font book to find my font, then go back to FCP to select it? Dang!

Francis, Thank you for the cut and paste tip as well! Wish it were even easier but then again, a painter still has to mix his own paints (i think….)

    Thanks!
