The advice is good and always adviseable even though firewire is supposed to be hot swappable. DVX/MAC users have to be the most cautious as certain Macs have been known to take out the firewire port on the DVX while plugging in hot.

Presume you’ve already enabled device control in Premiere… Otherwise a real head scratcher.

Try making sure the camera is connected and powered on before launching Premiere. May make a difference.

Hiss in the headphone circuit is a known “problem”. It is not going to tape.

Setting the mic gain in the menu depends a little on the mic. If the signal seems weak, try changing it to -60 which will make it louder.

The meter goes red at -12db, not 0. So, you have some headroom to play with where that particular meter is concerned. For a good, solid signal you want to see peaks into the red.

The audio on the DVX can and will be pristine. If you’re monitoring the audio via the headphone jack on the DVX, know that the circuit is noisy. What is actually going to tape should be clean as a whistle. The input on the DVX should only be set to “line in” if the mixer is outputting a line level signal. You should have the levels set for peaking at several segments.

Adjusting the input impedance via the menu (either -50 or -60dB) will make a signficant difference.

I have a wireless mic (different brand) that generates an incredible amount of hiss. I would look there first. The DVX has a documented “problem” of a noisy headphone circuit that doesn’t go to tape but in your case, as you describe it, that wouldn’t seem to apply.

If speed is important and there is potential for shooting in low light levels, you might want to consider just using squeeze mode. The visible difference in quality, when viewed on the small screen, is negligible.

I’ve bulk erased them before for reuse in non-critical applications. There’s always the risk of dropouts on used tapes. I don’t believe bulk erasure will increase or decrease the likelihood of a dropout.
