anyone found a fix yet? have been facing the same issue. once i create a straight path using the pen tool, i just cannot select it directly in the composition. i can only select it by selecting it in the layer. it is highly annoying! even after bringing both the anchor points (of the layer and of the shape) manually to the centre, still selection is not happening!

Thanks Daniel, this script was the closest solution I could possibly find. Even I was looking for a function that would crop the pre-composed layer automatically to the size of contents. When choosing a single layer and pre-composing, the ‘leave attributes’ option is available which does the job, but if I precompose multiple layers, it takes the size of the main comp. When there are multiple assets, I’d want each to be in their own size. This script is the best workaround I could find. Thanks once again!

for some reason, you can copy only a single path directly into path node. For instance, if you have many letters written in an AI file, if you copy them all together and paste, they will come as masks, but if you use the directly selection tool and select only one path, copy and paste that into Path node of AE layer, it will paste as a path and no masks will come. It would be a tedious task as you will have to rearrange and align your file/logo/text whatever that is.
Alternate is, which you can use, to copy and paste all together as masks, and just add a stroke from the ‘add’ menu and then add a fill.
