thanks for your response. i guess my question is now, what do i do from here? the firestore was rented and is long gone on other shoots. and i’m left with an entire shoot’s worth of mxf files.
my first instinct is to rent another FS-100 and try to copy my files now on the external hard drive to the the disk recorder, run the “organize” feature and THEN try to import it into final cut.

Thanks Jim and Rumpy for your thoughts.

i tried importing into FCP 5.1. While this time the “Import P2” feature acknowledged that the
mxf files did exist, it said something to the effect
of: it did not recognize the organization of the
    contents.

as far as running the organization feature on the
firestore: i did not. i followed the FS manual’s
simple instructions for transferring files to a Mac
computer which essentially amounted to a drag and drop
explanation. however, i believe the manual covered
this feature in the Windows section and I wondered at
the time if I should run the Organization command just
    in case.

now i wonder if i don’t have any folders labeled
“contents”, “video”, “audio” etc. because of this. my folders almost entirely consist of plain mxf files, completely uncategorized.
