Having looked all over (ie: Google and being thrown to DVX user, CreativeCow, etc) and finding no thoughts, mine are this:
I tried doing this with a 1TB Western Digital drive to no avail. I have two HVX’s for a shoot I’m doing at Harvard this week, and last minute we decided we needed something quick and dirty to dump to, or at least as an additional backup.
I did what everyone seems to: Checked the ports, checked the cables, still no dice – I keep getting the “Too Manny Targets – Turn off the device.” Looking up the error code in the manual, it simply says “There are too many 1394 Connection Destinations.”
So I have a smaller Maxtor drive sitting in here that belongs to a friend and is backing up some random footage. I dumped it and tried it, and it worked.
To look at the drive, I’m not sure I’m correct on this, but my thought is that the 1TB WD drives are physically two drives internally. Thus, even though the software says it’s one drive, physically the camera is seeing it as two, and doesn’t know where to send the data.
Sounds too simple, maybe it is. But this makes the most sense based on the error code.
Panasonic, I love you, but you could be slightly more clear on your error codes descriptions. 🙂
Hope this helps – if you try another drive that you can confirm as a single physical drive, let me know.
Best,
