  • p2 to HDD “too many targets” error

    Hi,

I need to transfer P2 files to HDD offline. In HVX manual page e-84 it says it is possible to “copying from p2 cards to the hard disk drive (1394 host mode)”

That is why i purchased Western Digital My Book 1TB hard disc.

    So here is my workflow;
    1.I record to P2 card
2.When P2 is full i switch HVX to HOST mode
3.I transfer the P2 contents to HDD
4.I continue to shoot with P2
    That is simple.

But when i do that it hvx gives me “too many targets” error and “turcn off the device”

I am wondering if anybody connect HVX to external hard disc through the fireware in “host” mode? If yes what is the hard disc brand and the size of the hard disc.

I am trying to understand what is wrong in my setup? It is hard disc or size of the hard disc? should i buy smaller one?
Ps: i do not power HDD from HVX. It has seperate power supply.

Having looked all over (ie: Google and being thrown to DVX user, CreativeCow, etc) and finding no thoughts, mine are this:

I tried doing this with a 1TB Western Digital drive to no avail. I have two HVX’s for a shoot I’m doing at Harvard this week, and last minute we decided we needed something quick and dirty to dump to, or at least as an additional backup.

I did what everyone seems to: Checked the ports, checked the cables, still no dice – I keep getting the “Too Manny Targets – Turn off the device.” Looking up the error code in the manual, it simply says “There are too many 1394 Connection Destinations.”

So I have a smaller Maxtor drive sitting in here that belongs to a friend and is backing up some random footage. I dumped it and tried it, and it worked.

To look at the drive, I’m not sure I’m correct on this, but my thought is that the 1TB WD drives are physically two drives internally. Thus, even though the software says it’s one drive, physically the camera is seeing it as two, and doesn’t know where to send the data.

Sounds too simple, maybe it is. But this makes the most sense based on the error code.

Panasonic, I love you, but you could be slightly more clear on your error codes descriptions. 🙂

Hope this helps – if you try another drive that you can confirm as a single physical drive, let me know.

    Hi,

The size of the HDD is really going to be determined by the size of your cards. The camera will set up and partition the HDD into 15 parts. Each part will hold one card.

If the drive was formated into two partitions earlier by a computer, it could be that the camera is confused. The Drive should be a smaller 1394 drive and format it with the camera.

    Hope that helps,

I had wondered if the card size did indeed matter. I’m using a 16 and 32 GB in each cameara. That might not be helping the confusion.

    Thanks, in any case!

    Jan,

I was just searching the archives for this topic and found your post. If I may, I have a student who recently purchased an HVX-200 with a 16 Gig card and a 32 Gig card.

She needs to off-load the cards to an external hard drive during a trip she will be taking. Would the camera partition the drive for the 16 Gig card or the 32 Gig card – OR – for the combined 48 Gigs of the two cards. Would she need to just shoot with one of the cards in the camera to avoid off-loading issues? I’m trying to help her purchase an appropriately sized external drive. Could you assist me with this issue?

Thank you in advance for your help.
