That’s kind of a strange assumption on Apple’s part if true… wipes are a fundamental tool of motion graphic design after all, and plenty of people don’t use FCP as part of the design process, they import all their assets directly into Motion.

All the other motion graphics apps I’ve used provide specific wipe functionality… when you’re about 20 layers deep and you think “You know what would be cool? A soft-edged diagonal wipe bringing that element on”, you don’t really want to have to change apps to find purpose-built tools for doing it.

But I guess when you’re offering cool stuff like behaviours it’s easy to overlook the need for boring basic things like wipes! 🙂

Yes, I’ve been building my own wipes up till now, but it just seems weird that Motion forces you to go the long way round for something very basic when the philosophy behind things like behaviours is to simplify and speed up what would otherwise be very complex and time-consuming!

    Thanks Jim – that’s exactly what I needed 🙂

Thanks Dave, I’ll give that a try.

FWIW, I’m told that the Offset function in AfterEffects is a one-step route to infinite pan, as long as you’re working with a seamless texture. As the pixels scroll off the edge of the screen, they automatically wrap back around on the other side.

There will be other elements in 3D space in front of the texture. I want to use it as a transitional effect, giving the impression of the camera dollying off at 100mph for a couple of seconds, with the texture background whizzing past, before slowing down again as new foreground elements come into view.

Ah right, that’s what I’ve been doing. I’d hoped there was a better way, that didn’t lose the handles on the clip. Thanks anyway!

  • Cool, thanks for that. I didn’t notice the RAM preview option hidden away in the “Mark” menu – it’s an unusually counter-intuitive place for Apple to put it.
