July 7, 2013 at 5:05 pm in reply to: AVCHD offline issue with mountain lion?

[Dale Roberts] “I couldnt rename the folders as you said for some reason”

-You were trying to do this directly on the SD card, right? You need to move the plastic switch on the SD card into the position that is not “Locked”.

[Dale Roberts] “In my Data Import Utility it sorts spanning out automatically… aside from that it just renames clips and doesnt link them together. Interestingly I didnt have to fiddle with folders/doing the show clip contents move… Data Import just found them on its own.”

-That sounds like good news. Maybe you should let the data import util bring in your clips, stitch together the spanned ones and then use “NameChanger” to batch rename them.

I have Clipwrap 2 and it can stitch together spanned files and just rewrap, not, transcode them. This would be plan B if you can’t get the end result you want from the Data Util.

Doesn’t Canon have a forum for C100 users struggling with the same issues?

[Dale Roberts] “I do note tho that PP doesn’t really like long clips… scrubbing was VERY difficult. It froze most of the time… mind you that could be my Mac… it is a little old and slow!”

You should post your system specs if you want people here to help. No one wants to stop to ask what you’ve got. Just include it in your posts.

[Dale Roberts] “So I am thinking there would be no probs with offline media relinking as now, they are just normal, renamed clips in a folder on my computer…”

-That sounds like you’ve got it figured out.

July 7, 2013 at 4:54 pm in reply to: Playback Problems with AVCHD Files

Sasha, there is a list of troubleshooting here:

    https://forums.adobe.com/message/4293848

If you post your system specs (processor, RAM, GPU, PPro version, etc. yes all of the detail of your computer) then someone might be able to point you to the specific problem.

If AVCHD used to playback fine with yellow bars and now no longer playback smoothly and has red bars in the timeline, I’d guess the hack was applied previously and then you applied a PPro update and the hack needs to be applied again.

July 7, 2013 at 4:44 pm in reply to: iMac and CS6

[Dale Roberts] “also I’m on 10.6.6 OS which is not good for external drives I just found out… “

-Dale you need to run software update! There is no excuse for not being on the free update to 10.6.8 which was a great OS. For $20 more you could be on 10.8.4 which is also a great OS and may give you better support for your C100 camera.

Maybe you have already done it after my AVCHD tips in 10.8 from the other day?

Those G drives are supposed to be pretty good, maybe it’s the OS or it’s still under warranty?

July 7, 2013 at 4:34 pm in reply to: Playback Problems with AVCHD Files

[Sascha Engel] “but the render bar shows red for all the clips and it plays back very staccato, skipping a lot of frames.”

-Does your editing computer meet the Mercury Playback Engine (MPE) specs? It sounds like MPE is off. Is MPE enabled for the project? You can check: I think it’s under the menu item: Project > Settings. If you see something like “MPE software only” and no option for “MPE” your system doesn’t meet the MPE spec. If your graphics card has at least 896MB of Vram there is a workaround to get PPro and AE to recognize many unsupported cards. https://forums.adobe.com/message/4822080 It works well.

Please post your solution here when you find it.

July 7, 2013 at 4:25 pm in reply to: Working with naming redundancy of MTS files

    [charlotte kaufman] “My Questions:

    1. Is it a problem that there is a redundancy in the naming of the .mts files, and that i will have several clips in the project with the same name? All the clips are organized into a folder structure based on date and roll, so i’m not worried about the name redundancy when i’m actually editing. I am worried that if the media gets disconnected Adobe won’t know which clip to look for, and may try to reconnect the wrong clip with the same name. Does Adobe reconnect based only of file name, or does it also look at the path? “

-In my limited experience PPro only looks at the name, not the path (as FCP7 did). I did a write up here: https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/3/942907#942907 of my workaround to prep clips prior to import via the media browser.

[charlotte kaufman] “2. Alot of the footage is shot by non-professionals, who didn’t know to break up clips. Therefore, we have a lot of “spanned” .mts files. is there any solution to spanned files? I’ve read in a previous forum that there is not, and that the only way to avoid the issue is to transcode. Is that information still true? “

-I believe Clipwrap 2 (Mac) can rewrap, without transcoding, your spanned files into 1 file. I haven’t tried using the rewrapped files in PPro though.

Please post back with what worked for you in the end.

July 5, 2013 at 12:23 pm in reply to: Nvidia GTX 570 for Mac Pro Early 2003 3.1

    Hi Kallan,

I did a lot of research on this last year for my then new purchase of a used MacPro 3,1 Octo core 2×2.8 machine. You should know what path you are heading down before buying that card. BTW, it’s listed as a 480 not a 570. I could not recommend paying that much money for a GTX480.

Prices have come down on PC video cards like the 480 in the last 12 months since the introduction of the 6xx and 7xx Nvidia video cards in the last 12 months. This makes some new options available, see below and use google. In general the 6xx cards offer the same performance with less power consumption than the 5xx cards. BTW, here’s a good site for comparisons: https://www.hwcompare.com/12524/geforce-gtx-570-vs-geforce-gtx-670/

    Some history:
The bad news for MacPro users desiring a Nvidia card is the only official mac compatible Nvidia PCI card released recently is a very expensive and often out of stock GTX680 (there was a GTX 285 and a GT120 in the past). This stranglehold on Macs and push towards ATI cards and FCPX use seems to be a strategy recently at Apple (sorry, OT). This lead a COW member Dave Pirinelli (aka: MacVidCards on ebay) to develop custom firmware for hacked PC video cards with the Mac EFI firmware on them (Mac uses EFI at boot and this provides the Mac’s grey boot screen). Read Dave’s post here( it’s the last one): https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/2/1017518#1017641 Also: https://my.creativecow.net/David-Pirinelli
I have read all over the internet Dave’s posts that the GTX 480 (the card you linked to on Ebay) requires more power than the MacPro power supply can provide. Over time this can ruin the power supply and other internals of the MP. Dave stated in one of his many posts on Netkas, MacRumors or his ebay ads, that he had to dial back the clock speeds on the GTX 480 and 580 to reduce the card’s power consumption, to be within the mac spec. For awhile his cards were the only option for MacPro owners and many members here may own one.

Dave’s hacks were unfortunately pirated and since then many more eBay sellers have sprung up selling mac compatible cards. I believe your AUS seller maybe one such person. Your AUS seller also doesn’t mention if the clock speed has been dialed back. They may or may not know what they are doing. I’d stay away from 480 or 580 regardless. Dave is the source and it looks like he is on vacation but may have some cards up again soon.

The bottom lines is if you want to use an Nvidia card in the MP AND have an EFI boot screen you are limited to expensive: OEM GTX 680 or hacked cards. Dave is the source of the knowledge behind the hacked cards. Once COW member reported having a problem with a hacked card from him: https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/2/1032628 …FYI. YMMV.

The good news is Apple has started to roll most Nvidia drivers into the OS, and Nvidia offers even more up-to-date web drivers after every OS update.

The other option is if you are running 10.7.4 or later, and don’t mind losing your boot screen, you can buy a PC video card (again not a 480 or 580 due to power consumption) and get great results. I did this on my 3,1 with a GTX 470 I bought for $100 USD used and it worked well. There are many discussion on this on the internet. Here one: https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1440150&highlight=macvidcards

Please do your own independent research as the newer options may include the 7xx series, which I know nothing about.

[Dale Roberts] “I’m assuming I would need to call AVCHD ‘avchd’ and ‘BDMV’ ‘bdmv’?”
    -Correct

[Dale Roberts] “Do you manually rename EVERY clip? Or does the software then work it out for the other clips… I can typically have 500 clips or even 1000 if I go for big 2 cam shoots.”

Rename them all manually? Incorrect, the app “NameChanger” (free) will batch rename your clips. You have to drag them into the window of “NameChanger.app”

[Dale Roberts] “C100 I use Data Import Utility to rename the clips into a similar naming form as you have suggested… I think, from memory, it also then stitched together clips bigger than the 2gb file size limit… how do you get around this issue with your “namechanger” software/multicam issues?”

My cameras didn’t come with a utility for Mac. Stick with yours, if it works. Stitching the spanned files together is a big plus.

[Dale Roberts] “I am assuming once you go to shoot again on the SD cards they will be reformatted with capitols again eg PRIVATE, AVCHD etc and then I would have to redo the above process yes?”

Yes, you have to redo it every time. AVCHD is a consumer format, Mac wants you to be able to view it but not get into it.

I am a DP so if someone here knows better, then please chime in.

June 28, 2013 at 2:20 am in reply to: AVCHD offline issue with mountain lion?

    Hi Dale,

I have switched from FCP7 to Premiere CS6. There are differences in how PPro references your media (not as well as FCP7). Once you put it in a folder and import it into Ppro, don’t move it, or at least know you will have to “know” where it is and show PPro where it is. The issue is that in 10.8 the “PRIVATE” folder is encapsulated by the OS. Right click & select “Show Contents” in the OS opens it. This can’t be done within Premiere. The work around is to rename the encapsulated folders in lowercase ( “private” )
Then the OS lets you & PPro in. A neat trick.

I also shoot AVCHD on multiple cameras, which creates potential havoc for PPro if you have to relink to your media. If 3 cameras all have the same file# “0000.mts” then PPro gets confused and uses one camera file for all the cameras, even when you have relinked. This happened to me once, and that was enough.

Today I wrote up a best practice guide for myself. It may help you.

Workflow required for less painful AVCHD Multicam native editing in CS6 on a Mac w/10.8:

    1. Insert SD card from camera into card reader.
    2. Open the SD card. Change “PRIVATE” to “private”, repeat for ‘AVCHD’ and ‘BDMV’ folders.
    3. Download & open “NameChanger.app” (google it)
    4. In “NameChanger.app” using the “Prepend” function change name of .MTS files from “0000.MTS” to “130627 PT int Acam 0000.MTS” (DATE + PROJECT NAME + CAM + FILE# ) or similar descriptive name for viewing in PPro timeline. (erase your mistakes using the “remove characters” function).
    5. Using Apple’s Disk Utility click the icon for “New Image” and create a disk image (.dmg file) of the SD card. Settings: Read only, no encryption. Note: Read/Write will create an exact copy of your ENTIRE card including the free disk space. This will really just take up unnecessary extra room on your system.
    6. Repeat until all SD cards are archived.
    7. When ready to edit, open the .dmg ‘s of your SD card. FCP7 will recognize them as mounted SD card so you can transcode them. In PPro no transcoding is necessary, so just copy them to your scratch disk or media drive, organize a convenient folder structure: Acam, Bcam, Ccam, etc. Use the Media Browser to navigate to your new folders and drag the media into a blank area of the project pane to preserve the file structure.
    8. When done editing, ypou may delete or archive the files from the scratch drive, as you already have the camera originals, organized and encapsulated as .dmgs.

(This is my own new “Best Practice” to follow based on all the posts I’ve read. COW Please feel free to append)

Quote: “I will be making Hacitosh computers from now until the put out a IPAD version of OSX.”

-Agreed, I think the Hackintosh community will most likely see an increase in users thanks to Apple today. It also looks like that maybe the most cost effective and upgradable way to go.
