Hi – apologies for not responding sooner…

As of the build prior to the GM that I believe released yesterday (???) FCP7 and the various menu spillages / bugs that I had shown in the first build have been corrected.

FCP7 works as it would under Lion which I’m currently using right now.

I see no reason why 6 wouldn’t work under Mountain Lion – Does 6 work for you under Lion / are you able to create a dummy HDD to test that on?

From what I can see at least the jump from Lion – ML is negligible compared to that of SL – Lion

    Regards,

    Hi Jules,

The delete command does have a shortcut – instead of pressing the ‘delete’ key as you would in FCP7 when you have an inpoint and outpoint on the timeline, you now need to press ‘ with the standard FCP shortcuts in PP6

If you run your mouse over the record monitor buttons and highlight the ‘extract’ command.

    Hope that helps some!

Yeah, I totally understand that proper DAM, creating a solid workflow and systems to support it definitely takes time.

We have over 20-odd years worth of footage that at some time or another has been needed to be re-ingested and such. We’ve become a sort of video library for one of our clients – which both means regular work and the headache of storing it all.

We have an internal cataloguing system which is okay…it’s just a little antiquated in a modern world, especially when the client asks for ‘images of the ocean’ and you have to take a stab in the dark for the relevant tape / carded media.

The prospect of CatDV helping us to carry metadata throughout the production and editing process is something that I think will help to push the ‘modern organisation of things’ that I’m trying to achieve.

I’m getting into contact with a reseller in order to help us with workflow ideas – this is something I want to do right, I definitely don’t plan to rush out and buy the software in the hope it will solve everything without proper planning!

    Thanks for the help!

You’re right Jon, clicking on one of the ‘spilled’ items in the File menu does prompt you to take your footage to the respective application you selected!

I’m under the impression it is just a bug, perhaps I’m just reading too much into it.

Can I ask what made you choose FMP over Hiero?

I’m going to an event in London in early March hosted by the Foundry which attempts to explain how Hiero will fit into the workplace environment, so hopefully I’ll find out some more there too

    Hi David,

I have a few more images to share –

iChat Theater Preview is still able to be pressed – it does indeed launch the Messages app by default.
I don’t have much experience with Theater Preview, but initial launch of the Messages app (as directed by FCP) gives me a ‘Funk’ sound effect.

This could just be due to the fact I have no contacts to share with however.

I’ve also noticed something very interesting – under the File menu, there appears to be a few things missing, namely Edit To Tape, Reconnect Media, Media Manager, Log & Capture, Log & Transfer etc.

You can right-click and have access to Reconnect Media / Media Manager in both the timeline and browser however, and keyboard shortcuts for things like Log & Capture still work as previously.

Could this be a somewhat sly move on Apple’s part of effectively trying to force people into a tapeless workflow by omitting these items from the File menu?

Or could it be bugs / glitches to do with Mountain Lion’s first Dev Preview?

Another interesting point to note is that FCPX actually freezes and ends up ‘Not Responding’ when I try to create a new Project – this is likely to be due to the bugginess of a first dev preview, but still somewhat unnerving….especially considering FCP7 seems to test better under 10.8 than FCPX does!

I’ve made FCP7 render and export timelines, reconnect media, move media with the media manager and launch tape controls – all of which still work for the time being.

If there’s anything you’d like me to test, whether by screen recording or otherwise, please let me know

    Cheers

February 17, 2012 at 10:23 pm in reply to: The Foundry Hiero & Final Cut Pro X

Hiero’s not really designed to be a NLE – I’m sure you know that.

I’ve been playing with the Hiero betas – it’s definitely a great tool, but I believe it’s use seems limited to medium-large VFX houses.

It’s great for reviewing content, especially if set up correctly with it’s ‘watch folders’ (I can’t remember the Hiero-fied term)

I’m looking for a way through which to integrate Hiero into our house at work – we’re not predominantly a VFX company, but I feel the tool would be great for producers looking to give the ‘OK’ to timelines without having to disturb the editor, or needing access to the media. (Hiero merely references media, it doesn’t need a copy of it)

I’d just like to make this known – I’m currently playing with the ML development preview, all signs point to Final Cut Studio (7) working under the new OS so far…

    Here’s my confirmation –

Notice that the Pro Apps updates direct me to the app store – the codecs and such seem to download through it now instead of the regular old ‘system update’ window.

I realise this is predominantly a FCPX forum, however I thought it would ease the minds of any potential early adopters – so far at least, you’ll be able to keep FCS around for old client projects.

Hope this helps in some way!

I do plan to see how FCPX will perform on 10.8 – I’m sure it’ll do fine however.

January 12, 2012 at 6:56 pm in reply to: Cinema 4D – Advice needed with deformers / effectors

    Hey, thanks for the reply!

I’ll check this out tonight – I’m very grateful you sent back a scene file

I may actually rebuild my cylinders then – I don’t want the scene to crash and implode

    thanks again 🙂

You’ll be fine with that set-up in terms of CPU & RAM

I’m most likely wrong, but RAM for Rendering (or at least extensive amounts of it) won’t make leaps and bounds of difference compared to a more powerful CPU / GPU…

I’m working on a Macbook Pro (Which has also had it’s internals replaced / modified etc) and it runs quite nicely – Of course, I’m rendering things for corporate animations and not something like a Pixar film…

You should be fine however – but someone else may give you a better idea…
