Why give us a gain switch at all…the camcorder is officially 47dB signal to noise which is poor for a camcorder of this spec. I await a second camcorder arriving next week but I have my doubts. I was told the BBC have this camcorder for evaluation I would love to see their white paper on this baby.

I checked with AVC and without, as you say if you do not use gain you should be fine. I see where you are coming from but sadly both mains and battery.

Firstly Jeremy, this does not show up viewing it on an LCD less than 40″.
Vince I have been assured by Panasonic that they are going to get to the bottom of this issue, so my advice is as follows…
    1. Do not buy from a box pusher
    2. Buy from a official Panasonic dealer
    3. You are paying $10K or above so ask the dealer for a test drive
    4. If you can only test drive in the dealers premises make sure they have an HD-SDI 40″ LCD that you can view the pictures from the camera.
    5. Stick the camera to 720 60P and film darkish areas at 9dB
    6. Look back at the footage…you will not miss the dancing dots if they are present.
Note. The dots do not show up in DV mode.

I have a 2nd Generation HPX-301 for review and if you care to look at my blog https://www.hdwarrior.co.uk you will see how noisy the camera is. I have had to suspend my review till Panasonic offer a fix for this problem.

  • I use Exposure Room which is also free. You get 3 modes LOW, MED and HD, the site also allows you to “download original”… you can pass word protect your footage, once you do this you can only view the footage via an email link, your client will also need a pass word which you create when uploading. I will pass on a tip for this web site, remember to encode any video as progressive if you are putting it on the web.

  • Thanks Michael, it comes free with the MC1P a little transcoder chip inserted by Sony to allow one to send ones thoughts to the camera…just as well I wasn’t due for a colonoscopy !!!

February 14, 2008 at 1:21 pm in reply to: AJA io HD so far ?2300 for nothing !

Hi sorry to here this I found AJA more than useless with this problem, I am now running V5 software with Leopard and have a fairly extensive edit next week I will get back to you if this problem re-occurs, I have not had time to re-assess it this week but be sure I will give it full attention next week. If it freezes again it will be going back for good I will not put up with sub standard kit costing £2300 !!!
