October 23, 2011 at 2:19 am in reply to: HDV .mov files won’t play on FCP and QuickTimeWant to keep the most original format I can as an archive. H264 doesn’t work well in FCP 7.
Everything I edit is my footage so for the HDV files I need something to convert them (or re-install the OS10.6.8 and lock the computer, which is what I’m intending to do).
However I do shoot with the JVC HD111E for other clients who use FCP 7 and 6 in post. This is the issue I need to work around, although the main one has just emailed me telling me he’s had enough, bought Adobe Production Suite with the 50% SWITCH offer and will move over during the slow period around Xmas.

It certainly works. The downside is this means archiving everything as Apple ProRes (fortunately I can use ProRes LT) which takes up extra hard drive space, also it’s fairly slow.Next experiment is to record as m2t files on my Firestore and see if Clipwrap fixes it.

October 22, 2011 at 8:59 pm in reply to: Would installing ProApps QuickTime Codecs work on FCP 6?If you have FCP 6 installed you should already have the codecs for ProRes that it can use installed too. When converting your HDV files to ProRes use the 422 version of ProRes (which is SQ).
Also don’t let Quicktime 7.6 upgrade any further (to QT 7.7) it’ll create the same problem (not that it makes any difference to you now).

October 22, 2011 at 3:27 pm in reply to: Would installing ProApps QuickTime Codecs work on FCP 6?Yes that’s right. FCP6 won’t handle the LT or 4444 versions. I think in FCP6 SQ was just called Apple ProRes.

October 22, 2011 at 2:13 pm in reply to: HDV .mov files won’t play on FCP and QuickTimeI tried uninstalling iTunes with MacKeeper, then re-installing version 9.? from my 10.6 install disc. Then downloaded and installed iTunes 10.3. This didn’t fix the problem with the HDV files.
VLC is the only app I’ve got that will open them.

October 22, 2011 at 12:20 pm in reply to: HDV .mov files won’t play on FCP and QuickTimeIt’s iTunes 10.5 update that’s caused it. Working on a cloned boot drive myself to get an urgent job for a new client completed by Monday.
Then I’ll do my third complete system re-install this year. Last one was when QT 7.7 did the same thing a couple of months back.
Can’t run a professional business like this. Seriously considering buying Adobe Production Suite before the end of the week to get the SWITCH bonus.

Sorry Ravi, I don’t have any first hand experience with Nikon video.
So I Googled “Nikon D90 video, banding problem” you might want to do the same, seems you’re not alone with the problem.Cinematographer, Steadicam Operator, Final Cut Pro Post Production.
