Tried…
1) using a different piece of source footage with the same effect?
2) Copy/paste the layers into a new project, try it then?
3) Restarted lately? 😉
Seriously though AE7 is the most buggy program I have at the moment. Bring on CS3. I frequently get “Cant insert item into locked list” problems that only quitting/restarting AE7 can fix.

With the project I’m on now, a 70% opaque black box behind the text works nicely, and is a nice change from Joe’s method (which I usually use). One might call it RetroBasic 🙂

Fair enough :-/ I looked into a bit more and found the read-only “active” property for effects, but that’s no use.
In the end I’ve animated the radius and intensities down to zero, since it twice as fast as leaving them up. Duplicating layers isn’t worth the hassle…after all, I can let the machine work overnight on the sequences.
