Why not ? Because it isn’t a Varicam or have anything to do with it. I’m getting the feeling you may just be wanting a little attention. Sure there are other forums there might be more interest. Most ‘pros’ I know are taking a wait and see attiutude about this camera. You’ve decided its already the greatest thing ever. The greatest camera that doesn’t exsist. Good for you !! I’m done playing in this thread.

That’s exactly my point. Everyone keeps talking about this as a $20,000 camera like its all there and ready to go. It’s not. I’m not saying you’re saying that but, all this press on indie filmmakers blogs and websites all excited about the $20,000 figure are fooling themselves.

Personally, I don’t understand why we are talking about this camera at all on the Varicam forum or any forum actuall. Maybe under “News and Press Releases” or such. It is a long way from being anything but, a press release at this point.

I have a Varicam and the cheapest lens I’d dare put on it cost $19,000. Not sure what you can get for $10,000 but, it probably isn’t a HD lens.

$20,000 doesn’t include the lens as far as I know. That’s another $20,000 at least right there

No, there are no choices. This camera doesn’t even exsist yet. It’s not even anywhere near exsisting. I find the whole hype over this camera funny. Marketing can say whatever they want. It doesn’t mean engineering can make it happen or at the price they promised.

Even if they got it out exactly as discribed in a year I wouldn’t trust it for a for a long time after it came out. So much is non industry standard that there are going to be teething pains like you wouldn’t belive.

JPEG2000 isn’t HDV it’s a magnitude more computationally intensive to decompress and recompress. Current PC and Mac based editing stations are not going to be able to work with this unless dedicate hardware is added. If they even support it nativly at all which I’m not sure will happen.

I hate the looks of that thing. Looks like a Fischer Price toy. Video cameras should never be any color but, black in my book. Certainly not silver.

As far as I’ve read they don’t even have working cameras yet and it won’t suppport 24p when released. They are ‘hoping’ to offer 24p late next year some time. It uses JPEG2000 compression which is another wavlet thing like HDV from what I understand. That means nothing is going to be able to edit it natively for awhile.

I don’t think you can actually buy anything directly from Panasonic. That’s just an online price list. I think they’ll still just send you the contact info to a dealer who will not have it in stock but, will be glad to order it. Month later you might have your book.

I ordered mine from http://www.fletch.com . They have them in stock and I bet could be talked into overnighting it.

Seriously you think without the relationship between Apple and Pansonic the Varicam would never have happened ?

That’s all marketing good or bad. They decided to team up for an advantage in the marketplace. The both got a market boost on the Apple ‘hype’. FCP was hot so go with it.

Thats business as usual. Its nice FCP and Varicam play nice together. I bought a $3,000 mac just so they did. That is exactly what Apple wanted to happen.

People are dealing with 1,000 different formats without Microsoft or Apple involved. Panasonic just decided to play a little differently.

This issue actually came up for me too. I wanted to send a friend using a PC some raw Varicam footage to play with. After capturing it in FCP thru firewire on my mac I failed at every attempt to get it to be usable on a PC even with Avid’s codec installed. Is there anyway to transfer DVCPRO footage from a mac to a PC without recompressing it or uncompressing it ?

I didn’t mean to say Tom is at fault in anyway. He is a great guy and knows his stuff IF you can actually get to talk to him. That is no small feat to finallly get a phone call back from him. Almost as if you won the lottery. It is crazy Panasonic only has one Tom for all the Varicams on the west coast. They need to hire/train more Toms.

I’m not sure I was offered anything like that. My agent specifically told me nobody covered someone taking my camera unless there was a physical break-in or damage. He said if I rented the camera out nobody would cover it if the person just never came back. I’m no expert on insurance but, I had several people tell me this or similar. I’ll ask the guy on Monday as I really am curious if I wasted $200 insuring the camera down to LA.

My agent has been doing production insurance for years and I know lots of people consider him an expert in the field. He is an agent for most of the big insurance companies that still do production insurance. I’d be surpriised if he got it wrong but, ya never know. Now if this means a camera lost in shipping is covered or not I wouldn’t guess but, I will find out.
