Well if you didn’t choose that option then you would. I never even noticed it till you mentioned it. You also need the FRC to bring in 60p footage as slow motion. I’m not an editor by trade in case you can’t tell by my struggle with this 😉

Ok so its always shooting 60i (or 50i) even in the progressive modes and the pulldown is done just like the dvx100 correct ? https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/mvp_e/user/point/dvx100/24p24pa.htm

So no need for a FRC.

I have both now. I originally was looking at the 900 to replace the Varicam but, the value of a used Varicam is such that I decided to keep both and just rent out the Varicam rather then sell it. Varicam rental market is still very strong. I haven’t even actually had anyone ask to rent my HDX900 yet.

The 900 provides all the features I actually use on the Varicam and the idea was to buy the 900 sell off the Varicam and pocket the change. No sense paying for features I don’t actually use. I can’t remember the last time that I’ve ever used anything but, 24, 30, or 60 fps unless playing around. I’m a video guy so, I don’t use shutter angles either.

So, the HDX in 1080 mode is recording differently for each of the 1080i frame rates unlike 720 when its always 60fps to tape ?

I was thinking it did something like always recording at 1080/30p and flag frames like the 720 modes. So there are no extra duplicate frames to worry about stripping and hence no need for the FRC ?

Now to confuse me a bit more why does it refer to all the modes as 1080i modes when some use progressive frames ? Is it outputting interlaced footage when recorded at 30P ?

Sorry if this basic stuff I should know but, I’m brand spanking new to 1080i. I’ve been using the Varicam so long my brain is having trouble adjusting.

I’m not talking about doing pulldown from 60 to 24. I mean when you shoot 24p on the Varicam you have to run the footage thru the FRC to strip out the extra frames correct ? I didn’t mean shooting in 60p just that the Varicam is always recording at 60p. I’m curious how 24p in the 1080i mode works is all.

I’m struggling a bit with this. Varicam is always 720p/60 no matter what frame rate you choose. It just pads the extra frames and hence the need for the FRC.

The hdx900 is still recording 60fps even in 1080i mode right? Whats going to those frames at 1080i/24p if so ? I’m curious because 1080i/24 in FCP looks alot like 720p/24 before you apply the FRC to it.

I would have figured it was just flaging the footage to be automatically uprezed and stil recording 720p/60. There a paper somewhere that covers dvcprohd’s version of 1080i ?

Of course but, most people looking at the HDX900 are probably not in a position to buy a 900R even if they wanted too.

BTW, what was your opinion of the HDX900 ? You really havent said other then mention a few features/functions. Ron already gave you up so I know you’ve had a chance to ‘play’ with one 😉 I really would like your opinion on it.

Personally, I think its a great value and side by side against my F model Varicam it holds up very well. I can see differences in the filtering and detail functions I think. The Varicam just seems ‘smoother’ to me. With detail off the Varicam is soft but, the HDX900 looks too soft when detail is off. Not sure I’d ever use the HDX without some detail on. I need to take it where I can access better monitors though. The 17″ Panasonic lcd is not really what you want to judge cameras on.

The 900r is just a tiny bit more expensive 😉

I didn’t but, Unislot is actually something Ikegami came up with I think. As far as I can tell there doesn’t seem too many of them out there. The quality of the ones out there probably wouldn’t fly for anything besides ENG use.

Lectrosonic is working on one they hope to have out for NAB next year. I’d wait if you possibly can.

Probably the Sennheiser ek3041 is the best of whats out there. https://www.sennheiserusa.com/newsite/productdetail.asp?transid=004435

Azden makes one too but, I’m not a fan Azden stuff https://www.azdencorp.com/shop/customer/product.php?productid=93347&cat=37&page=1

They do ? That an official Panasonic package or some kind of dealer offered package ? Not that I would have bought such a thing but, nobody ever mentioned it to me buying mine. I cant find it listed on the Panasonic site.

Not saying its not true but, maybe its something their dealer network put together here. Panasonic selling fuji lenses seems strange too.

Mine was sold to me just like my Varicam and the camera before that. “Do you want a viewfinder and tripod plate with that ?” “OK, well put in the order”. Thats really what I want out of my dealers though and probably why I’ve actually got my camera instead of waiting still.

I pre-ordered mine several months ago so, maybe its just a new thing Panasonic is doing.

Anyway, lens choice is very important and you probably don’t want to leave it up to Panasonic. Best deal is get the camera body and rent the right lens for the job. If you find one you love and can’t live without then buy it.
