the rationale sounds cross-eyed – but the result is more sales for you. If you put all the dances on 1 DVD then a few parents will buy DVDs and make copies for all the rest.

If the dancers are dancing to a series of songs chosen by the dance instructor you shouldn’t have any problems.
But if the performance is based on a purchased script there will almost certainly be contractual restrictions regarding recording and specified damages if you ignore those restrictions.

I use an XLH1 and swear by it but I don’t think it is a good choice for home movies. The A1 is a third of the price, has a wider lens, is more robust, and has better ergonomics unless you are using the cam shouldermounted.
Todd is right about senn – they make quality products except the sennheiser MKE300 – that is a step down from the stock mic. I don’t think it’s even made by sennheiser.

agreed – but my point is not that zooms should be encouraged, rather that “film look” has little do with “organic human experience”.
Zooms are not part of traditional film language in large part because zoom lenses are a relatively recent innovation. Likewise with shallow depth of field – for Citizen Kane Orson Welles chose Greg Toland precisely because of his experience achieving extreme depth of focus.

The stuido 1 does come with a clip for belt mounting but also mounts under the camera the same as the beachtek.

using cooler/darker colors for the background will also help.

one caveat – the large lens on the XL1 may maintain maximum aperture throughout more of the zoom range. Not sure how the pana compares – but this is certainly true when comparing the XL series to the XH/GL cameras. So when shooting in the middle of the zoom range at maximum aperture the XL may be using a wider aperture, which will render a shallower depth of field.
