That is Leo Tichelli’s view not mine. For wedding work I think presets are often a good choice, but I know a lot of shooters who get great results using manual and auto WB.

It doesnt eliminate the value of voice communication – you also need to know what the other shooter is going to do 2 seconds form now

yes I color grade everything in post, if you don’t I can see that warm cards might be useful, but except in cases like that where you want to change the image, match cameras, or compensate for a discontinuous light spectrum, my recommendation is stick with the presets.

This matter has been discussed extensively over the years on the cinematography and lighting forums, here is a link to a post from Leo Tichelli:

Posts from Leo, John Sharaf (DP for 60 minutes) and many others put a strong case case for sticking with the presets.

the bravos are great for longer runs but IMHO overkill for the average 2-3 DVD wedding.

add me to the presets only camp, I never use auto white balance, and manual very rarely.

with fcp5 – I find it sometimes necessary to force a render with stills, by applying a filter. Maybe 10% of photos require this and I haven’t yet worked out the variables.

I don’t attend WEVA but I have attended many “educational” conferences and have rarely felt the money or time were wasted. They have 3 functions – disseminating information, providing oppurtunities for networking, and (the BIG one), offering inspiration.

the motion tab in FCP is a very powerful, intuitive tool. Competitions totally change the whole gestalt of event videography, inevitably placing exagerated emphasis on innovation. The real key to a beautiful photo montage is beautiful photos.

However ingenious an effect, it will soon be on a button for every teenager with iMovie.

good example. I think there are three rules to using effects:

First the effect should be motivated by the footage.

Second the more subtle the effect the more freely you can use it – film look filters are often transparent to the average viewer, they see the effect, but are unaware of the artifice.

Third the effect should be used to enhance or draw attention to (aspects of) the subject matter not the effect.

competitions aside, the reaction we should be looking for – the reaction the customer is looking for – is ‘what a beautiful wedding’ not ‘what a clever video’.

I had a similar problem last week. FCP could open older versions of the project but not the latest one. It was a drive problem – the external FWHD failed shortly afrterwards
