adding some diffusion will help – gaussian blur if you don’t have anything else – there are a lot of plugins that do better –

lowering the pedestal to crush the blacks is recommended if a lot of the noise is in the shadows

I’ve used Y connectors in the past and have not noticed any significant level drop – but maybe I just didn’t notice – most of my experience was with an ME66 which is a very hot mic anyway.

My question about noise was really to do with the cameras preamp – if the level drops significantly then I would expect the signal going to tape to be noticeably more noisy. I’ll do some testing with my setup – thanks for the input.

Steve – thanks for the heads-up – I had not realized that a Y connection could lower levels. Would it also impact noise levels? I don’t know if a box would be that useful in my situation – normally for more elaborate set-ups I am using 2 mics anyway. This is more for run-and-gun type situations where I don’t want to have to tweak levels on the fly.

color finesse is a great plugin – has all the features you need – no power windows though. Only problem is that echo-fire (needed for NTSC display) has a very difficult relationship with FCP – and breaks just about every time FCP is updated.

What I would have done is got a few more details about exactly what he wanted – then sent him a link to some clips on my site that I felt would convince him that we had the experience, creativity and expertise to meet/exceed his needs.

why would you prepare a custom demo dvd in response to such a casual inquiry? That type of hard sell tactic is not going to work in most situations.

it doesn’t happen all the time – I did check opacity was at 100% and composite mode was normal.

There are free scripts available from apple that will add chapters to QT movies. Also a bunch of 3rd party apps.

  • Jan – how did it go?

  • leave the white balance at 3200K for all the cameras – this will simplify the color grading. Use whatever gels work best for the band.
