Is also have a good look at the recording chain to find out where and why you ended up with the problem, to make sure it doesnt happen again.
We can and do ALL make mistakes, but not learning from them is daft.

HI Alexander.
I dont use FCP (cant stand it – AVID boy myself) but there will be a hum filetr in the set of audio filters. You will probably need to select the mains freq youre on (50hz 60hz) and it should rip it off fairly well.

Dedicated softwares like Isotope RX and spectral layers are designed for this sort of use and will do a better job, at a cost.

yes you are right and FCP/ AVID etc etc do have basic notch filtering.
The impressive thing about dedicated tools for restoration and tones removal is that they “learn” exactly which sound you want to replace and attenuate / remove it, and its harmonics. Thus leaving other sounds of the same frequencies (say in a vo) alone.

BUT theyre not an easy learn. Sometimes I get amazing results, and sometimes I struggle to improve things much. I think its down to training.

I had a listen and a play with noise reduction software, but with the time available I didnt manage to get rid of your distortion im afraid. Its pretty harsh in places.

To improve it a little with eq only try rolling off a little of the LF around @100hz and a little MID freq notch at about 1k with a Q of 1.0. And last drop off a little HF at 6k ish as the LF drop makes it sound a little bright in the balance. This reduces the noticability of the distortion, but doesnt remove it leaving everything else in tack, which is what i was hoping for.

There is a software called spectral Layers from Divide frame (now being distributed by Sony which might be worth a look. I dont have it (yet) but Im told its very good too. These restoration softwares are a steep learning curve. Im sure there will be a demo you can try it out on free?!

I think a specialist restoration engineer with tools like cedar might be able to do more for it. Depends on budget if youve got money to spend on the full fix. A specialist who spends their days doing this sort of thing will be able to get much better results than me because of practice, experience, tools and training.

Of course nothing is as good as getting the recording right in the 1st place!

If you mean that lots of the people in the field recording arena havent used pro tools, Im not surprised. Its not really a field recording tool. its a post tool.
Ive never seen anyone use pro tools on a shoot either, but im on shoot locations most weeks.

although the stage content is important , dont forget the audience. When they applaud, laugh, boo, cheer, gasp etc etc youll want to hear them as much as the stage generated content. Its a theatre and the audience are contributors too.

Consider hanging 2 or 3 rifle mics over the stage down as low as you dare go. I think any directional mic will be better than none, but I think to buy QUALITY rifle mics, you need to not use the word budget. they cost many hundreds each (£782 UKP on a quick google) and youd need at least 2 better 3 or 4. Plus power.
Cant you hire in some decent gear.

I got an email from Paul Neyrinck today saying that V – control for media composer is on the way, but theres a few teething problems so it would be released only when stable and working right.

Im very much looking forward to that. I quite fancy having an ipad but do want a real reason for buying one.
