I will offer a strong second to Chris’ comments about MacGurus. It’s easy to build your own array through them. You’ll save money and get all the help you need. You can’t beat the combination of price and customer service. Next time I need another array, I’ll be going back to them.

    Thanks Wick,

I did double-check the analog cables and they look okay. I also ran the hardware test just for the heck of it, and it passed. I’ll keep trying. If anyone has any other suggestions…

    Hi Terri,

I’ll add my 2 cents here. Everything Floh said is absolutely true. Media 100 is the most intuitive, easiest-to-learn system I’ve ever used, and that’s why I’ve stayed with it all this time.

About 10 years ago, when I was working in a large education office, I trained a group of high school “behavior problem” students on Media 100. I only had a few days, but within the first day they were making 1-minute MTV-style videos. They loved it.

Now that Boris owns Media 100, there is more reason than ever to stay with it. They’ve made great product improvements and they’re listening to their customers.

Whatever you decide, I wish you the best.

    Floh,

Just curious… have you tried MainConcept’s encoder? If so, how does it compare with BitVice?

I was using Medea, too, back when I was still using SCSI. SATA is the way to go now, IMHO. You’ll save a ton of money if you build your own array (if I can do it, anyone can do it!). Just call the folks at MacGurus and they’ll answer all your questions. You can find their kits here:

Ditto on that. I bought my SATA array from MacGurus and they were very helpful. Great value, and the drives reliable performers.

I have a DSR-45. Let me echo Kieran’s request for support for firewire equipped DVD Recorders.

    Larry,

I’ve heard that if you add another 4-drive array and connect it to the additional 4 ports on your Sonnett 4+4 card (tricky, but doable), then stripe all 8 drives as one RAID 0, you’ll have enough bandwidth/speed to do HD at 1080i. At least some of the benchmarks at MacGurus would seem to indicate it’s possible. But I honestly don’t know, since I haven’t done it personally.

    Hi Michael,

I”m running it with Media 100 HD, but I haven’t tried it with Media 100i. No problems so far.
