  • Thanks Tim! I’m in Bear Valley Springs, which is near Tehachapi. BTW the Rocky Mountain Elk that roam through here are not native to this area. In the 1960s someone got permission to import 200 elk from Yellowstone to a ranch near here for a “game farm.” All the elk escaped and thrived. They can’t be hunted in Bear Valley Springs, which covers 25,000 acres. I never get tired of seeing them.

  • The camera aspect nudges the needle for me. I’ve been filming the elk that roam through my mountain community, and the rig I’m using is heavy. I have to count on getting lucky when they’re lounging around, giving me time to set up. But those darned elk don’t pose for me, even when I ask politely, so there have been many times when I missed what would have been a good shot because I didn’t have a newer iPhone. I always shoot and edit in 4k, so the iPhone 12 pro definitely has my attention.

BTW I’m retired and an amateur, with aspirations to become an “accomplished amateur.”

I’ve been using a nice little free app to check on my 32-bit apps:

  • [Robin S. Kurz] “OR… are they maybe just people that know what they need, see those needs served best (if not exceeded) NOW by the current lineup, don’t need to compare GHz and Teraflops with the next guy just to feel good, and therefore are not worried about their imaginary “PRO” reputation or upgradability in 5-10 years?”

This describes me perfectly. A year ago I bought what was then the latest 27-inch iMac. I maxed it out with everything except for the RAM, which I bought from a third party. Apple had already announced that there would be an iMac Pro later that year, and I could have waited. But I had been using FCPX on iMacs and MacBook Pros in the Apple store, and I knew the then-new 27-inch iMac would meet my needs for a long time. One could argue that it was even overkill for my needs. I’m very happy with my decision.

[Michael Hadley] “If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can walk into your nearby Apple store, touch the product, talk with Apple employees. Pro app users are left to commune in solitary (if terrific) online forums. Attending NAB would show that Apple really, really likes us, dammit!”

I agree it would be nice if Apple attended NAB. Just to clarify something: there are free sessions in most Apple stores on FCPX and Logic Pro. You can sign up for them online under the “Today at Apple” program.

    Hi Michael,

I have the mid-2017 27-inch iMac, and it’s working great for me. My setup has the 1 TB SSD and of course the core i7 processor, but I chose to get it with the minimum 8 GB RAM, because buying an extra 32 GB was much cheaper and simple to install (and this doesn’t void the warranty). For my purposes the 40 GB RAM is plenty.

I’m also using an 8 TB RAID 0 array connected to one of the Thunderbolt 3 ports. Although I’m doing mostly 1080p projects, the 4k stuff I’ve played with so far hasn’t been a problem. In fact, I would say my system is overkill for what I need. As much as I would love to have the new iMac Pro, I couldn’t justify getting one on my budget. Overall I’m very happy with my setup, and I love using FCPX with it.

I think this could work for you. I’m thinking of doing the same thing myself, but I would choose the core i7 over the core i5 processor. I also would get the SSD internal drive, and an external Thunderbolt 3 4-bay SSD RAID, such as the one made by Akito https://www.akitio.com/portable-storage/akitio-thunder3-quad-mini

Good luck, and let us know what you decide.

This review is a year old, but it provides a nice comparison of Pixelmator and Acorn:

    Olof,

I have had the same experience. I too love Media 100 and it will always have a special place in my heart, but I’m also in the process of making the switch to FCPX, for many of the same reasons you listed.

I’ll never knock Media 100 — it’s been a solid, reliable tool for a long time — and I was never more grateful than when Boris bought the company and supported the product for us. But… FCPX really rocks, and it’s hard to imagine that Boris could have the resources to develop a new, robust, built-from-the-ground-up video software like FCPX. And I would love to be proven wrong.

I’ll probably continue to use both for a while longer, but I’m afraid my Media 100 days are numbered.
