Seems so weird. I previously had a dual dual-core 3.2 Woodcrest Xeon system; now I have a dual quad-core 5420 Xeon setup overclocked to 3.0Ghz. Maybe it’s chipset or something? Why isn’t my system crashing?

But for me I haven’t found a single video/graphics/compositing/encoding application that won’t run/install on Vista 64. The ability to use more than 4-gig of RAM has fixed our memory crashing problems and the system runs with much more stability than our old XP 32-bit platform. I’d investigate Vista 64 compatibility thoroughly with your other apps before you dismiss it.

Have you considered putting in Vista 64 Brian? I think the new CS4 will be more compatibility. It’s being launched in a couple of weeks and probably on sale soon after. You’d have to be sure your hardware has V64 drivers though.

I’m running Vista 64 & CS3 Suite on an 8-core Intel Skulltrail without these problems. It may be a different story for the 64-bit version of XP though.

I’m just about to put a new 1gb GTX 280 into my CS3 setup. I’m not how it will work with GPU-accelerated Adobe effects, but I know that plugins like Magic Bullet make good use of the shaders and clock speed of the fast NVidia cards. My current 8800GTS 512mb works very well in Vista 64 with CS3.
Unless you are doing high-end animation and have bundles of cash falling out of your pockets, I’d avoid the expensive Quadro cards. Personally I’ve never had any trouble with any Nvidia card with any version of CS* Premiere. There are sometimes dodgy drivers but these affect the whole system, not just Premiere. I always use the latest official drivers from NVidia as driver development invariably goes forward.

I thought I may have sounded a bit brusque there. There’s no doubt we are moving to tapeless, but the path is a confusing, costly and emotional transition. …of course when solid state becomes cheap enough these in-field work problems will vanish.
Thinking about it, even a portable media format like XDCAM HD has a similar problem. No you don’t have to back up each day after shooting, but most clients don’t have XD decks and probably have to get their files copied on hard drive, presumably by the Camera Op from his camera at some stage after the shoot.

Noah, I just caught this thread. I can tell you if you were out there shooting two weeks for Discovery and you had to back up four to five hours of P2 footage every night back at your hotel, you’d see what some of these guys mean. Many docos and corportaes have just a producer, DOP and soundo. They don’t have a data-monkey coming along for the ride. I use P2 for commercials but for many people it is and will always be a real problem.

One other thing I’m looking at is a Westcott Spiderlite fluoro TD5.

I’m wondering if it would punch out enough light in my 5′ Octodome as a key, or least a medium to large Chimera. I can’t seem to find any feedback on this light on any forums. It would be a compact cheap option for traveling with daylight lamps.
