How do you apply the curve to your material?
I’m using After Effects with the free Red Giant Plugin LUT-Buddy on an adjustment-layer, so I can reduce transparency of the layer or change the blending mode, if I feel I have to.

Maybe I don’t see all consequences in framerate/shutterspeed selections, but IMHO, if you choose a shutterspeed of 60 flickering issues will be the same either with 25p or 30p, since the exposure time of each frame is the same (1/60th of a second).

Can anyone confim that? Or am I totally wrong?

DSLR cameras with video-mode only seem to be more inexpensive than “normal” camcorders, but that’s not true. To “really” work with a 550D oder 600D (or any other DSLR) you’d have to invest quite big time in stabilizing equipment, audio and lenses.

And those cameras are very tricky to work with. I got a 550D (T2i) myself and I love the look of the footage but it’s definitly no point-and-shoot camera. You’ll have to get quite deep into DSLR-shooting to avoid all of the traps and achieve great looking (and great sounding!) video. If you’re interested in DSLR-Video you may want to take a look at the COW’s DSLR-Forum.

I can’t recommend any camcorders others than the one’s I worked with (and they all are either “old” SD-Cameras or not “on the cheaper side”, like the semi-pro and pro Sony HD camcorders).

But the Canon Vixia or Panasonic HDC series seems to be worth a look. Haven’t worked with them but from what I read they seem to be solid, easy to use cameras.

I’m working with ML quite a time now and I’m very happy with it. Don’t want to miss it anymore!
I can’t say anything about the audio features since I use an external audio recorder, the 550D onboard-sound just as a reference.

What I found out is that not every new version is stable on every camera. Some unstable versions brought the camera to “hang up. So if something weird occurs while ML is running, it’s best to stop recording (if possible) and get out the batteries quickly.

I found his builts to be more stable than the “original” ones by Alex…

Concerning features to enable: I find focus-peaking, rack-focussing, the histogram display while shooting, the magic zoom, the possibility to shoot with “cleaner” ISOs and the higher bitrates with the q-scale feature most useful.

Can’t say anything about “non-PAL flicker-issues”, since I was around in Europe quite a lot but haven’t worked in the US or any other NTSC country. Sorry.

But: Conversion of 60fps to 25fps is just as problematic as 30fps to 25fps… AND you’ll have to shoot 720p with the Canons if you want to use 60fps. No FullHD with 60fps.

Or you could shoot 24p. Should be usable any in country. If in doubt do a PAL upspeed of 4% (which is common) in post for PAL countries and a pulldown to 30p (which is common as well) for NTSC countries.

Shutterspeeds between 50 and 60 to eliminate flickering…

IMHO the least thing I would do is use footage with different framerates in one project. Especially with 25 and 30 fps…

Had to do this a couple of times and results where… well… time- and work-intensive and not really stunning.

So, what I would do is try to maintain a constant framerate troughout the whole production whenever possible.

Canon recommends class 6 cards. I had (very) cheap class 10 cards that stopped under critical conditions (mostly with high ISOs) and I had good class 4 cards that worked most of the time quite well. So, if you want to get shure, get class 10 cards.
Be shure to format your cards after copying the clips to your computer rather than just deleting them. Deleting sometimes causes trouble with writing speed.

I use SanDisk but I know a lot of people who use Transcend cards and never experienced any trouble.
