I know you wanted to skip that, but the problem is not the kind of camera you’re using, but the compression and the way color information is reduced… So a DSLR is not worse than any camcorder that uses 4:2:0 … with that having said 😉 …

I’m very happy with Keylight – an extremely powerful tool that ships free with Adobe After Effects. Very well documented in a lot of tutorials (here on the COW and all around the web)

The pyro-guy does a lot of stage-effects and seems to be pretty experienced. But we will definitly have a “safety-meeting”, since neither the band nor the guys behind the camera(s) have worked with pyros before.

When working with higher shutterspeeds you risk strobing. But if you’re shooting more or less static pictures and avoid fast(er) camera movements you can get away with very high shutterspeeds.

Thanks, Phil! Yeah, that’s exactly the problem, I was worried about!
I’ll talk to the pyro guy what he’s about to use.
So we’ll better avoid fast flashing pyros and stick to more or less constantly burning stuff.

Well, I *think* if you don’t see fields, there are no fields… At least, if you check your footage with a player like VLC with deinterlacing turned off.

I’m not familiar enough with FCP to answer FCP related questions or saying anything about, how FCP deals with interlaced or progressive footage, since I’m working on windows.

What you wrote about changing property settings sounds right… At least that’s what I would do in After Effects or Premiere, if I’m sure the footage is actually progressive. But as I wrote: I’m not familiar enough with FCP…

Not sure if it has anything to do with that, but did you uncheck the “interlaced scaling” checkbox in MpegStreamclip before transcoding?
