Shallow DOF in bright sunlight
Trying to transition from video cameras (and their built-in ND filters) to a Canon d60. I’ll be using the DSLR primarily to get shallow DOF shots of people. When you are shooting in bright sunlight, can you use a high shutter speed and slow ASA rating to force a wide aperture?
I have an ND 0.6 grad and a polarizer at my disposal, and wonder whether I should be loading up on heavier, across-the screen ND.

Bo… when shooting outside a variable ND filter is the way to go. Then you can set your f-stop where you want it, set your ISO low… like 100, then dial in the Variable ND Filter https://www.singh-ray.com/varind.html

Thanks. Is it sharp? If so, that looks like the optimal solution.
It also looks expensive. Am I mistaken that a higher shutter speed will work, or is that not a possibility with the Canon 60d? (I have yet to take delivery.)

When working with higher shutterspeeds you risk strobing. But if you’re shooting more or less static pictures and avoid fast(er) camera movements you can get away with very high shutterspeeds.
