Just an update — I went ahead with the following mac setup and so far so good:

-Early 2008 Quad Core Mac Pro (eBay $150) with OS X 10.11
    -mini-sas card
    -USB 3 card
    -HP LTO6 Ultrium 6250 (eBay $1500)

My plan is to have a tape backup of all projects for long-term archival, and a hard drive backup for easy access.

  • UPDATE: I spoke with support and they suggested deleting and re-adding quicktime as the default MOV reader. That did the trick.

I’m not sure if this still works with your system and the MKII, but in the past I would use to Canon’s XF utility to bring up the clips and go to Edit>Export MXF. This unwraps the MXF files and drops them in a new folder. Then drop those MXF files into media composer, and it will Quick Import them.

It’s a little roundabout but it skips AMA and any sort of relinking shenanigans.

Right, but the problem is that the system ID issue is an ongoing bug, and hasn’t been fixed yet. So every time you talk to licensing, you have to explain the problem and have them transfer you to technical support. It’s just a couple minutes of wasted time every time you call.

I’ve had the same problem for a year since I upgraded to 8. They logged it as a bug but haven’t been able to fix it.

My main beef is that to even get through to support, you need to enter your system ID…which doesn’t work since it doesn’t recognize it. So every time, I have to hit the other option (new customers or whatever it is), explain my situation for the umpteenth time, and then get transferred to support.

HOWEVER, the one time I called they gave me a “one-time use” support code which I’ve been able to use for a few months now to get through to support as needed. Maybe you’ll be as lucky…

UPDATE: I spoke with Avid tech support and this issue is supposedly being worked on by the engineering team. Bug #MCCET-19.

I was playing around with the Boris effects Pan&zoom, and there are some things I like, some things I’m not sure about, and it’s $200.

I know this is late, and I’m not sure that I’m having your exact same problem, but Pan & Zoom seems to be broken at the moment (I’m running v8.4). When I do a zoom + pan, the camera pulls out but also sort of boomerangs between the keyframes. So if I start on the CU of a man on the far side of a photo and zoom out to the full photo, the man will actually go offscreen for a second as the camera boomerangs out to the wide shot. There are a few other people complaining on the Avid community forums. I have a call with Avid support this afternoon to find out what the problem is, because it’s unusable (and I’m starting to cut a 18-minute doc entirely comprised of stills)

  • Canon XF viewer creates a new copy of the files that are rewrapped. Your original files will still exist.

  • By far the easiest method is to open the files in Canon XF Utility, go to edit>Export MXF. This will rewrap the canon files as MXF files which you can drop into your bin (if I remember correctly).
