Hi Juan,
Could you tell a little bit more on what extras are needed to work with such a screen? Calibration, input board maybe?Thanks!

To answer the first question: when you see the no source tape box blinking, you should click it and give it a reel name, if you dont, you cant digitize/capture.

Yep and that’s why people cannot use the dreamcolor without the extra decklink device, cause dreamcolor can only dream in 10 bit RGB, so the signal needs to be converted first.
Personally I wouldn’t go for the plasma. few reasons why… It’s very big, which isn’t that comfortable if you have it on your desk, where you probably want it be to have a good look at maks etc. Plus, from what I read, it’s very hard to calibrate unless you use a DAVIO box ($$$) and a special probe, to calibrate and create LUT’s and repeat this on a regular base.
If I were you, and I am almost you (hackintosch project…), I’d go for a JVC-V24G1, or SONY PVM-2541, or Flanders or anything else that takes sdi.

[Job ter Burg] “QT Ref can sometimes be buggy”
I agree with Job. Yesterday one of my collegues did a QT ref and some shots did not show up anymore, there were just ‘black’ slugs in the movie file.

sounds like the correct thing to do, I agree. And I would like to add that you should also be carefull mixing these methods for the same footage. Reason why is because today I had to crop a piece of video that was above the identical clip, but because I used I different method of importing, the images didn’t match well anymore. Actually I now realise (its been a long day) that the original footage was captured from a XDCAM deck, and the cropped overlay clip was imported using the ama + transcode method.

In my quest for wisdom I also checked teh Avid help files on the topic of field order/import and got even more confused.
it says:
• Odd (Upper Field First) ordered: Select this option if the file is odd ordered and you are importing it into an even ordered format, for example, when you are importing PAL DV into PAL.
First, I always thought that DV PAL was lower field first and IMX MPEG50 for instance is upper field first. I’m almost sure about this…
What’s your take on this?

I have very little experience with luts or log-c, but can’t you create a test lut that blows everything out and then see if you can recover that in your primaries? Just a thought…

Its the smpte test pattern image, found in avid supporting files. Project format was PAL 25i

the Dreamcolor also needs the signal to be converted thru the decklink card, so would have had the same problem but spent even more money.
