Ian and all-thanks for the responses.
Ian, you are correct, there were no pics in thumbnails while the card was in camera and I got a Media Error when I tried to play back clips without pics.
I found out I had a problem only after I put the card into my MacBookPro and tried to import with ShotPut Pro. The media imported but without Mp4 files.
I then opened up the 16 GB Sony Pro SxS card and saw that the Mp4 did not exist in any clips.
I do not have Disk Warrior and did not have time to dig into the card. I needed to keep shooting and had to reuse the card. My backup cards are not Sony and I was in a run and gun situation and wanted
I put it back into the camera and did test records which were fine.
I decided to reformat the card and do more tests which were fine.
Everything about the card has seemed normal since this event.
I have used it without problem and reformatted it twice.
Of course I am checking replay nearly everytime I record something-wish I had checked earlier.
The card had been reformatted just prior to it failing. I never had an issue with an 8GB card which was loaded in the same camera slot.
Again now the card works fine in both camera slots.

No the only files that have with the Mp4 files are the ones I recorded after I reinserted the card.
I lost every file prior to reinserting the card. I did not have to reformat the card-I just put it in the camera and recorded just fine.
Now, after 2 days of shooting and checking replay every so often, I have not had a problem. No loss of files.
I am at a loss.
From now on I will be checking replay after I record a lot more often.

The data is missing on the card. There is no picture of the clip in each thumbnail display in the camera and I get a Media Error when I try to playback any of those clips.
I use ShotPut Pro to transfer the card to hard drive and it took less than a minute to transfer what should be 40 minutes of 720p/50 video. It should have taken a several minutes.
Again everything shows normal except that there are no Mp4 files!
The card does not show the files exist at all.
Not good! Sony 16GB card which is 3 years old. After reinserting the card in the camera, I am able to record without problem and all files appear to exist.

Well I would not go so far as to say it is a useless camera. It does make great video-though having a very obvious bump in a slow zoom does make that aspect unusable.
I had to shoot a live show with 20′ projection of my camera as it zoomed into the podium. Nothing like looking inept with a that issue projected for all to see. That was last year when I had had enough and sent it in for “repair”. Came back the same way.
It’s too bad that a nice camera like this continues to be shipped out with this issue.
Some of us do not have the cash to upgrade lenses and add the extra front weight.
The tv show I shoot with the EX3 happens to be a fast-paced duck hunting show. Most of the time it calls for quick zooms into the bird. The camera fails when I have to push into a 3 shot or 1 shot during in-field interviews. Manual zoom does work when my hand isn’t frozen from being in the cold wind and rain.I wonder what Sony’s response would be to a petition to replace this lens if enough users signed up!

Thank you for the quick response Don.
I did not see the other inquiry regarding camera settings.
As to outdoor whitebalance preset, shouldn’t I be locking in 5600k?
Thanks again,Paul

Craig is pretty much right on the money. Sony no longer sees this as a problem. I do not have to time to fight this anymore and have gotten nowhere in the past with the techs and cordial (over the phone) supervisor in New Jersey.
Keep your fingers crossed and hope you get a “good” one.

January 30, 2010 at 1:33 pm in reply to: I’m stumped…prior clip reappears over newly edited clipThank you all for your help. Sorry for the scream. After I finished my tantrum, I got similar answers from a more experienced editor in town. New sequence, copy and paste did the trick.
I’ll bookmark this one for future debugging.Once again, Thank You.
I think I’ve experienced the true definition of insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results…

The heat trick may work with chemical hand warmers or even a 12 volt heated sock like skiers wear wrapped around the viewfinder.
This is a hunting show where I am laying in a ground blind trying to be as hidden as possible so the waterfowl will not see me. I am also attempting to cover a flock or several birds moving along at 40 mph.
Not something one can do with a monitor (which I own) and would not want to attempt handheld work with.
I have to be mobile-jumping up to get interviews, cut-aways, etc.Obviously I was not in an ideal situation and made the mistake of clearing the element with a dirty glove.
I realize even glass will scratch when mistreated. Just wishing on a star, I guess.

September 24, 2009 at 2:49 pm in reply to: Settings/profile for waterfowl against cloudy skiesThanks Ron,
I do use the histogram nearly all the time. Sounds like a better way to watch my levels plus find focus on the birds in flight. I’ll crank my peaking and give her a go.
I do plan on using the image stabilizer as well unless someone can give me a reason not to. I’d rather not have to use Final Cut to stabilize those close ups.
