We run an Xsan with 10 workstations. We run classes in our studios with each user assigned to a class folder. Within each folder, we have individualized folders for each user. We also have group folders for collaborative projects. Only users in the group (and instructor) can access the group folders.
We had some issues when we first moved over to FCX because Event and Project folders were assigned individual users. Now that we have the system down, it seems to work well. Students first need to add a SAN location in their personal folder and others for their group folders. That creates event folders in each of the locations indicated. Project folders can then be added to each of the locations for specific projects. Other members of groups can then add that same SAN location to their personal profiles. If permissions are set up correctly, anybody in a group can then access content in group folders, but individual work only shows up for the user currently logged in. We have had no trouble with accounts/content being available on multiple machines, so students are free to use any of the workstations attached to the SAN.
If you need to move event and project folders from one folder to another, you will need to use the Xsan Admin tool on the server to reassign and propagate permissions so that new users can access the content.
