I’m curious if anyone has successfully set up FCP X in a collaborative environment, either using Xsan, volume-level sharing or other.

The standard scenario with FCP 7 would be: a) to have all users access a single volume with a single capture scratch folder on Xsan; or, b) have users with individual volumes on systems like Terrablock or FibreJet, where each has read/write to their own volume and read-only to everyone else’s volumes. The film-style editing model would be multiple editors simultaneously working on segments of the same project (each with a copy or sub-version of the master project). The facility-style model would be different editors working in different projects, but with the ability to start in one room and later continue in another. Or to pass projects from one editor to another.

Has anyone set up this type of FCP X configuration with two or more stations? Is it even possible? I understand that they can currently share common media that isn’t in an Events folder. Doesn’t the current status prevent sharing a common Events folder or even having multiple Events folders on the shared storage network? If you’ve got this working, please elaborate. Thanks.

    Oliver,
We run an Xsan with 10 workstations. We run classes in our studios with each user assigned to a class folder. Within each folder, we have individualized folders for each user. We also have group folders for collaborative projects. Only users in the group (and instructor) can access the group folders.
We had some issues when we first moved over to FCX because Event and Project folders were assigned individual users. Now that we have the system down, it seems to work well. Students first need to add a SAN location in their personal folder and others for their group folders. That creates event folders in each of the locations indicated. Project folders can then be added to each of the locations for specific projects. Other members of groups can then add that same SAN location to their personal profiles. If permissions are set up correctly, anybody in a group can then access content in group folders, but individual work only shows up for the user currently logged in. We have had no trouble with accounts/content being available on multiple machines, so students are free to use any of the workstations attached to the SAN.
If you need to move event and project folders from one folder to another, you will need to use the Xsan Admin tool on the server to reassign and propagate permissions so that new users can access the content.
    I hope that helps.

Thank you very much. Very helpful. Any idea how this sort of system might work in a volume-level system, like FibreJet?
