    Administrator:

Probably due to congestion on your server, I had trouble recently posting a question: Should Editing Computer Be Used Only for Editing.” I tried to post several times, apparently with no luck. Then, to my horrow, I saw that it had posted at least 5 times! Could you please delete all but one of these posts?

    Thanks.

  • Also, I wonder if in the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 line, I would notice any performance difference between the 1T and the 500GB. It will be the start-up disk, after all, not the media drive.

    Thanks,
    Giraut

  • Russ,

I’ve read a bit about the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 being nice if you use it in an external enclosure and not so nice if you install it in an internal drive bay. Any thoughts on this being a really suitable drive for internal use on a PM G5 Quad?

    Thanks a lot,

November 11, 2007 at 4:35 pm in reply to: GREEN CANVAS — Trashing Prefs Doesn’t Help

It has now been several days since this problem first appeared. This is what I know:

    1. It is clearly more than just a green canvas issue. My sequences are also producing a dropped frame error message that stops playback and advises me to set my RT to Safe. This is strange, because I have played these sequences for a long time with no such problem. I seem to have enough RAM (4 gigs) and enough free space on all my drives, especially my scratch disk, so that my resources should not being taxed.

    2. It is not a preferences issue, because not only have I trashed my preferences (several times), but I have completely re-installed Final Cut 5.0.4, after trashing the application, the prefs and the receipts.

    3. It may or not have been caused by downloading the QuickTime 7.3 upgrade, but I have trashed the QT app, prefs and receipts, and the problem is the same. Can the QT upgrade have changed something on my hard drive that deleting these files failed to address?

    4. It seems somehow to be connected to HDV editing, because when I change my Easy Setup to DV NTSC, I get a regular black screen.

    5. I have disconnected my external media drives, and started up FCP. The screen is still green.

    6. Apple refuses to give me any help on this because the software is out of its 90-day coverage window.

Can it be that this problem is beyond the expertise of such as august group of FCP afionados as you? Please say it ain’t so.

    Thanks,
    Giraut

YES!!! I was just about to mention that (1) I had trashed and reinstalled FCP only to see the problem was still there, and (2) could it possibly be a problem with QT 7.3?

If this is the case, should I trash QT 7.3? And if so, is it possible to get the pre-upgrade version?

    Thanks,

    Russ–

    Thanks for your reply.

If you create a new FCP project and put some new clips in, is the canvas still green?

    YES

If you export an XML of your timeline and import it into a new project, is the canvas still green?

    YES

If you use the render manager to delete all of the render files does that help?

    NO

What type of footage and codec are you working with?

    HDV 1080I60 UNCOMPRESSED

Again, I’ve been using this exact system for this exact kind of footage for the last 2 years and never had this problem. I suspect some kind of file corruption.

September 5, 2007 at 12:57 am in reply to: reconnecting media and the ” file

I have a very similar situation:

I recently moved my computer to a new residence and had to disconnect my external media drives from my computer. When I started up FCP yesterday, I found, not surprisingly, that all my clips were disconnected from their media files. So, I proceeded to try to reconnect them. Just as a test, I selected one video clip file in my browser and hit reconnect media. But when I did this, the only “file” that showed up in the list was the character “. Just the quotation mark. So, I am unable to reconnect ” to any file, because I have no file named “. The strange thing about this is that if I close this project (which is a close copy of another project) and open the original project, all my files show as connected to their media. For a variety of reasons, I don’t want to use the original project file. I want to use the copy. Any ideas why this project (which I’ve used for 6 months with no problems) is suddenly not connecting to the media but instead is giving me quotation marks?

    Thanks,

    Paul
