thanks for your help on this one – photojpeg seems to be working fine on the small test ive done, the real test will be when i try it on a full length piece – typcially 4-5min. when you say photo jpeg 75 – are you refering to setting the quality slider to 75%?

I also noticed graeme from your QT demo’s of your excellent plugins that you are an englishman – in the words of Sting – living in New york? LA perhaps.

hey guys,

my original question was that my dv footage in an oversized sequence looked terrible, once i copied that footage into an 8bit timeline all the arifacts on the text and the dv footage dissapeared – hoorah!!.

my next problem is that the timeline and subsequent exported QT movie would not play without dropping frames even once rendered.

my thought that the 8bit timeline was too much for my internal SATA drive and that adding a scsi card and drive would help with smooth playback.

i understand about having mismatched codecs and that is not the problem – incidently i do have a cinewave but the cinewave codec doesnt seem to support my superwide sequence – get an error saying that my codec doesnt support this frame size and a red canvas.

so now my question is will my sequence play back over the scsi drive? im not interested in RT performance just smooth playback once a sequence is rendered.

thanks graeme you are exactly right. tried dropping clips in an apple 8bit timeline and voila!!! goodbye artifacts!

now the issue is that the timeline and subsequent quicktime movies will not play back off the internal sata drives.

i have a spare Atto UL3D card and a 70gig scsi drive – should that do the trick?

obviously avid has been a pioneer in the industry and is a solid product in its various incarnations….i guess what i was shocked at today was the night and day approach the two companies are taking….Apple brimming with excitement and useable features and generally putting the ‘wow’ into user requests ie sure they gave us multicam – but it’s not just some frumpy version – its the younger sleeker, sexier model!!!

by comparison the avid stand was tired, ho hum and the products look equally tired (i cant get over how ugly and clunky it is to work on a PC now, when compared to the elegant approach apple takes to the whole picture from workflow to asthetics) . it just amazes me in the comparison of the two companies…if i was looking for a new solution I know which one would be grabbing my attention!!!

if avid got their butt kicked at NAB as you mentioned – then they must enjoy it as they looked like a second rate solution at the production show in London.

this is not avid bashing just an observation that is becoming clearer by the day!

thanks for the response.

to answer your question on what monster machines can playout this huge sequence the answer is – dataton’s ‘watchout’ display software. it creates any sized canvas you want – each software key you add to your system allows you to control an individual screen.

we create place 3 screens side by side to create a 2160×576 canvas workspace in watchout. you simply drop the quicktime movie encoded to Mpeg 2 of your fcp 2160×576 sequence on the canvas in the watchout display interface and then that is replicated on your chosen display option – plasmas, LCDs or projection.

it’s a pretty cool system and works well for us you can check out a pic on our website at http://www.hillsong.co.uk – scroll down to the bottom of the page, there is a 5 picture slideshow one of the pictures is a wideshot of our stage set up.

the codec we are using is dv pal at custom size – what would be the benefit of using the animation codec?

i will try the command J option in quicktime pro tomorrow.

the whole oversized sequence thing is a bit taxing on the old brain at times…4:3 seems so much easier!!
