I knee jerked and hated X… I gave it one star. I then sucked it up and proceeded to cut a 5 min vignette of a band members take on music. I started to like X… Make no mistake this isn’t FCP at all… Remember I’m a decade long FCP user. I got to the middle of the project and love hate several things. Conclussion, I am not going to be using X anytime soon, that is for sure.

I gave it a fair shot and feel I understand the MTimeline and UI very well in two weeks. I don’t like basic editing functions. I don’t need the filmstrip or need MT to be honest. A thumbnail is more than enough. The real time 32 bit float color is what sucked me in… But the program is very unstable and it has been well documented. It’s def unusable for anything long form. Projects and events are lame. Tabs for sequences are not improved with projects. I still give it one star… This release after 2 years is a fail!

Get real? I’ve never had those problems… Maybe you will love fcpx since you don’t know how to use fcp7…

How can you say old time FCP users when x has been out a day.??? Not to mention everyone buying it uses fcp 7 and wouldn’t need to re learn anything… Now imovie people are ahead of the game cause they know what to make of that stupid filmstrip parading as a proper viewer. Many features are innovative and awesome but they went to far screwing with the timeline and back end project setup… It wasn’t broken and now it is…

My friends kept saying they were looking into avid and I was like no worries FCP X is gonna rock. Well, I was wrong it’s terrible enough to make me a 30 year old editior from LA who has been on FCP for a decade ready to jump ship… I’m sure they won’t miss me cause all the soccer moms will run out and buy it to edit birthdays with.

These thumbnails are killing me. Basic editing functions made more difficult…

After some testing on a couple tv’s I am convinced that:

Changing the output fields in frame controls from same as source to progressive… (leaving the VF/FrameRate at 23.98… took care of the weird edge blocking I was getting when leaving it as source.

Does that seem correct? The source is progressive though… You would think same as source was safe.

Even changing it to progressive, mpeg streamclip still says its upper first. I’m assuming that’s for the dvd player to spit it out interlaced properly?

I’m trying here… I need a good lesson or chart on this… I burned the same 2min clip with different settings.

    source:
    I have a QT r3d progressive 1k proxy at 23.976 source.

starting with best quality mpeg2 dvd setting:
the default setting under video format/frame rate sets itself to 23.98… I thought that was correct. I mean why wouldn’t you… If I un-grey the button next to it. it switches itself to 29.97…

I burned a disc with that and the edges seemed better/correct…

I then tried one changing the output fields in frame controls from same as source to progressive… (leaving the VF/FrameRate at 23.98…

This setting also seemed to have better edges.

I’m not trying to be a compressionist but this shouldn’t be so crazy. If it’s progressive then it’s progressive, but that doesn’t seem to be the case… It’s like you have to know magic to figure out what freakin setting will work correctly. I’m assuming in frame controls I should change “output fields” to progressive and leave frame rate at 23.98… Same as source produced edge issues. I know going to tape that everything is 29.97/59.54 with a reverse pulldown situation. But to DVD? Maybe frame rate is suppose to be 29.97 and output fields progressive? that kinda makes sense to me. When would you select 23.98 then?

I did use mpeg steamclip to look at info and this is what it said…
frame rate 23.98/ output field progressive it said upper field
frame rate 29.97/ output source it said progressive
frame rate 23.98/ output progressive upper field.

It being upper. Does that screw it up?

    I need to research these.
    field dominance
    output fields

I don’t know how any of this makes sense sometimes. I need someone much smarter to please set me straight… I need a good book on this topic of frame rates and what not…

    Thank you for your knowledge.

Wow, long read there… You guys have some patients, that is for sure.

Looking at the panny pro plasma since that seems to be the best client color “accurate” monitor… I would be running it through an mxo2. Wondering why that is the monitor of choice? Over say the Sony LCD xbr9 series with sony adding 10bit color depth?

    Thank you.

You were spot on with that fix… I should have tried a little harder problem solving, sorry… It’s just still so foreign to me. I don’t know all the little ins and outs you learn over time. So of course I was losing my mind. Thank you very much for the help. I will def be sending you a glintwerks log. I’m sure it’s something I’ve done. 🙂

    Thank you again.
