What are the specifics regarding what frustrates you? What do you find easier to do in 7 as opposed to X?

Paul, does the tool allow a simple change to the modern widescreen aspect ratio of approximately 2.39:1 adopted in 1973? Digitally for 2K that would be 2048×858.
Rick Lang
Rick,
The tool is simply a matting kit that “crops” a 1.78:1 source to 2.35:1. The Compressor Presets handle the cropping upon output …

Is your source footage 1920×1080? If so have a look at my 2.35:1 tool, Cinemascope Toolkit:

>>it would be nice if FCP added some sort of sequence-wide custom blanking feature
You mean a Letterbox Matte? If you are working with native 16:9 you might want to take a look at this tool that I built. I also have a 2.40:1 version.

“Just spotted on a Google search and it seems that the D3100 isn’t compatible with FCPX, you would need to convert first.”
Ah, ok. Then:
There’s a free version of 5DtoRGB that supports single clip conversions.

I believe that Andy was just looking for a way to create a 4 channel clip so that he could conform it to the XDcam format and save it on a disc.
Ah. I see and makes sense. Looks like T. came up with a viable solution …

Mark,
I don’t think Andy is looking to export four discrete mono “stems.” If this was the case you’ve explained how to do it.
Andy, you mention:
“… but still couldn’t find a way to simply create a 4 channel output from my 2 channel source ie Channels 1 and 2 taking Stereo L and R respectively and Channels 3 & 4 preferably just being empty.”
Can you elaborate? What would be the purpose of the empty channels (3+4)?
