Mixdown all the audio in the Timeline.
Especially make sure the contents of the nest(s) is/are completely Mix(e)down,
then Mixdown the output Sequence.

More explanation, from the ex-BBC guru:
“There is no specification of field order, as such, in any technical specification of video standards. The “field order” drops out of the specifications of the line/field scanning and frame blanking, which is all in ITU-R BT.470 and its successors (mirrored in the specifications by SMPTE and national broadcasting bodies). It’s all to do with the field blanking sequence, which specifies which line appears first in the video signal. That might be a whole-line or a half-line in analogue systems, so there’s no upper or lower field at all; that concept is overturned when you go to digital video, where the concept of the half-lines is dropped and all lines are full duration (e.g. 625 has 575 lines/frame of video, in two fields of 287.5 lines each, with a half line at the top of one field and a half-line at the bottom of the other). It is this extension of the half-lines that generates the concept of upper- and lower-fields, since the extra half line juts above the norm in one field and below it in the other.

Similar arguments go for 525 and for the interlaced 1080 structures.

And, if you do trawl all these specifications, you find that 625 is lower first, 525 and HD are both upper first. I can’t see how the standards can be interpreted otherwise.”

Indeed.
I find beyond about 10 FW drives things get a bit problematical with my G5, and getting them to mount is a bit hit and miss – especially with a FW DVCAM deck as well.

I’ve got a Belkin 3xFW800 port PCI-X card, with a 2-drive FW 800 bridge board connected to two ATA drives on each port – six drives in all, in removable caddies so I can swap to use the drives i need – out of the 30 or so ATA drives in caddies I’ve got holding my older archive.

Along with this I’ve got two Sonnet Tempo 8 channel SATA/eSATA cards running three additional SATA drives inside the G5, and a home made box of 11 external SATA drives – again all in hot-swap caddies.

So along with a couple of LaCie BigDisks on the Mac’s own FW800 channel I can run 24 drives constantly day-in-day out without ever touching the cables, just the hot-swap caddies (which are robust IBM server SATA bays, and Storcase IDE caddies).
But the cable swathe out the back of the Mac – held firm by multiple cable ties – is a sight to behold…

I don’t RAID anything (except the LaCie’s which come in a two-drive concatenated configuration).
In essence I’m holding on in for a big (and affordable) RAID-5 controller to be made available to allow me to step up to the next level.

All this has ended up this way because I’ve got an ongoing – low budget – job editing multiple programmes from a 2000+ tape archive.

In my experience a FCP beach ball is as likely as not to arise from disk activity (or rather lack of) –
and –
the blue screen is what OS X shows on shut-down when its doing a disk directory status assessment.
So –
I’d be checking out the hard drives first.

How is the Qyen drive formatted? (Not FAT32 so you could get the AVIs on it- that’s a no no with FCP).
How are you connecting it – FW800, right?

I get this in Tiger if I switch the foreground application away from a program that is working hard – FCP capturing for instance. Then I can only get back to FCP by Cmd-Tabbing.

I find it sort of reassuring, FCP saying ‘I’m busy – don’t interrupt’ 😉

Mine needs EXT TC to see SimpleVideoOut’s timecode.

I’m still using Tiger – SimpleVideoOut is a legacy application, last updated (v2.0.6) in 2005:

Can anyone confirm it still works with Leopard (if that’s what Caroline is using).

Check in QuickTime Pro>Get Movie Properties that the movie you are opening in SimpleVideoOut has a Timecode Track.

You mean stays at 00:00:00:00 (which is a deck fault), or starts there, and increments as normal.

When you play SimpleVideoOut, the movie’s timecode should be shown on the DSR-11’s monitor display as soon as you press the red Record button, with the deck paused (with your DVCAM/Ext.Timecode settings).

Probably not appropriate, but check there’s nothing funky going on with System Preferences>Universal Access>Enhance Contrast.
Inadvertently using the keyboard commands for this caught me out on a single monitor display…
